Library Gift Is a Bright Spot in Uncertain Times
Author donates complete collection of Newbery and Caldecott Award winners to Every Child a Reader.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, November 10, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Minnesota author Claudette Hegel has donated her complete collection of the Newbery and Caldecott Award winners to Every Child a Reader1. Hegel’s collection consists of every Newbery and Caldecott Medal and Honor book since 1922 and 1938, respectively, totaling 736 titles. The books are now in the Every Child a Reader library in New York City, where they will serve as a resource by appointment to librarians, teachers, booksellers, authors, and illustrators.
Hegel spent more than 20 years volunteering for the Minneapolis and Hennepin County Public Libraries and volunteers with Books on Wings, which puts books into the hands of underserved kids in schools. She is the author of five books on the Newbery and Caldecott Awards. Says Hegel of her CBC donation: “Knowing the books will actually be used to help many people instead of just pleasing me every day takes the sting out of the books being a half-a-country away.”
Every Child a Reader Executive Director Carl Lennertz says of the donation: “Just as books are gifts to a child’s growth, this donation is a generous deed in anxious times.”
Every Child a Reader is a literacy organization that runs popular national programs including Children’s Book Week, the longest-running literacy initiative in the country; the Children’s Choice Book Awards, the only book awards chosen by kids and teens; and the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature program. Every Child a Reader is a 501(c)(3) charity funded by individual and corporate donations and by the support of The Children’s Book Council.
