No other business comes close.

The nation's 31,000 plus Post Offices are linked by nearly 214,000 vehicles — the world's largest civilian fleet. As one of America's last vestiges to make house calls, 297,000 letter carriers and truck drivers log more than 1.2 billion miles annually when delivering to America's 151.5 million addresses.

Since 2005, 7,065 postal professionals have each driven more than a million miles without a single accident thru 2011. Reaching this pinnacle requires 30 years of service and a safe attitude.

Tips from a few Million Milers

For Orchard Park NY City Carrier Nancy Pillard, with almost 33 years on the job, safety starts before she even takes to the streets. "I make sure my vehicle is in complete operative condition every day," she said. "I identify and report repair work for lights, tires, wipers and mirrors and I then make sure that the repairs are done ASAP."

Five Points Station, Akron, OH, Letter Carrier Pat Betts has driven 34 years without a preventable motor vehicle accident. For his accomplishments, Betts joined the Million Mile Club. "I am proud of this recognition," Betts said. "I've learned to slow down with my driving as I have senior citizens on my route and businesses that generate a lot of traffic. I use my turn signals. You just have to pay attention at all times, and a little luck helps too."

Orchard Park, NY City Carrier Ron Reukauf started his postal carrier in 1978, but also has a few years of personal driving under his seat belt. His 40 years of driving experience has provided him with some sound practices and wisdom. "I've found myself adopting three theories on safety which have helped me so far," said Reukauf. "They are: 'Expect the unexpected;' 'Any distraction can put you in traction;' and 'Safety first, never last. Have a future, not a past."

Norway, SC Rural Carrier, Dwain Fogle has driven 32 years with a perfect driving safety record—just like his father. Bryan Fogle, Dwain's dad, delivered mail in Neeses and Orangeburg, SC, during his 41-year career. He earned the award before retiring in 1998. Dwain delivers to 452 boxes along 92.5 miles of highway and 35 miles of dirt roads in his right-hand drive jeep. Dwain credits his dad with teaching him to be respectful of others. "I've been taught as a child to be courteous. I think being courteous to each other is the main thing when you're on the road," he said.

Safe Driving Habits Start with Good Training
Driving for the Postal Service is a privilege that requires all drivers to demonstrate safe driving practices throughout their careers. Behind-the-wheel job candidates undergo a rigorous screening, training and certification process to earn credentials to operate a right-hand drive postal vehicle.

After a review of state driving records, candidates undergo a thorough medical examination and an extensive interview process. They then take a web-based four-hour defensive driving training course, followed by a one-hour defensive driving debrief conducted by driver safety instructors who reinforce key safe driving topics covered in the web-based course.

Candidates then become familiar with the vehicle through behind-the-wheel training in a mock driving course. The skills course acclimates candidates to driving postal vehicles under various conditions on an "off-road" course that simulates street conditions. Their performance is evaluated on a final drive prior to becoming certified to operate postal vehicles.

Information on the National Safety Council's Safe Driver Program is located at www.nsc.org/usps. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With 32,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 35th in the 2011 Fortune 500. In 2011, the U.S. Postal Service was ranked number one in overall service performance, out of the top 20 wealthiest nations in the world, Oxford Strategic Consulting. Black Enterprise and Hispanic Business magazines ranked the Postal Service as a leader in workforce diversity. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for six years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.

Follow the Postal Service on Twitter @USPS and at Facebook.com/usps

SOURCE U.S. Postal Service

H.E.A.T. (Help Eliminate Auto Thefts) is cautioning Michigan drivers to be aware of the continuing growing trends in unconventional auto theft-related crimes. Criminals continue to become more creative when it comes to stealing vehicles as vehicle security technology increases and as law enforcement and insurance investigators continue to successfully put thieves behind bars.

"Thieves are always coming up with new ways to steal vehicles and it's important for Michigan residents to be aware and educated to protect themselves and their vehicles," said Terri Miller, director of H.E.A.T. "Drivers need to know that preventing auto theft-related crimes goes beyond locking your car door, keeping personal items out of sight and parking in well-lit areas. Thieves have moved into areas such as component theft and online fraud. Michigan citizens need to be mindful of these schemes."

Some of the unconventional auto theft-related crimes on the rise in Michigan include:

Component Theft: Catalytic converter thefts are increasing once again; however, other vehicle parts, including tires, rims, airbags and navigation systems, are being stolen and sold to crooked dealers and repair shops.

Online Fraud: Thieves are turning to online purchasing sites like Craigslist.com and local sites like cars4detroit.com as easy outlets for selling or trading stolen vehicles.

"Push" Steals: Thieves push the vehicle away after forcing entry to release the gears.

Insurance Fraud: Vehicles are reported "stolen" to obtain insurance compensation. Customers are also providing false information to obtain insurance and using fake paperwork to title and register stolen cars.

Vehicle Re-Tagging/Cloning: Though thieves may be turning to other creative ideas, they are still re-tagging/cloning vehicles. Thieves obtain legitimate VIN numbers from cars matching the year, make, model and color of a stolen vehicle and swap or duplicate the identifying digits.

"Unconventional auto theft crimes continue to rise and especially online auto fraud," said Lt. Ray Collins of the Western Wayne Auto Theft Team. "Purchasers and sellers need to be aware of the scams out there. There are normally signs that the deal is bad, if only the victims would take that extra minute to look at the whole picture. Is the price too good to be true? Does the seller want to meet in a business parking lot or similar location, and switch locations, often repeatedly? Do not judge by appearances; scammers are often clean-cut looking, and suspects are frequently females. If it looks too good to be true, it most likely is. If something seems suspicious during the purchasing/selling process, call your local police department to have them look into it. When in doubt, don't."

H.E.A.T. encourages anyone with information on suspicious or criminal auto theft-related activity in your community contact the police department immediately, and then report the tip to H.E.A.T. at 1-800-242-HEAT or www.1800242HEAT.com.

About H.E.A.T.
H.E.A.T. works with Michigan law enforcement agencies to follow-up on tips. Tips include:

Perform a pre-trip inspection – Check your tire pressure, wipers and fluids. Simple maintenance can prevent many of the problems that strand motorists on the side of the road before you leave your home.

Plan your trip – Know where you are going and be prepared to exit. Indecisive driving is a major cause of traffic problems.

Large Trucks Have Blindspots – If you can't see the truck driver in his or her mirrors, then the truck driver can't see you.

Do not cut in front of large trucks – Remember that trucks are heavier and take longer to make a complete stop, so avoid cutting quickly in front of them. A fully loaded tractor trailer takes a football field and both end zones to come to a complete stop when driving at highway speeds.

Pay Attention – Distracted driving is a leading cause of crashes. Looking away for even two seconds doubles the chances of an accident. Turn cell phones and PDAs off.

Allow a Safety Cushion – Look 1/4 mile ahead for a safe path. Leave yourself an out.

Slow Down – Chances of a crash nearly triples when driving faster than surrounding traffic.

Keep extra water in your vehicle – Just as you keep a winter driving kit in your vehicle, it is important to be prepared when driving during the summer months. Keep plenty of extra water, sunscreen and non-perishable snacks in your car in case you are stranded.

Buckle Up – Safety belts are not a fashion statement – they save lives.

Abide by Traffic Rules – Follow traffic signs and signals – paying special attention to work zones.

Be Careful Backing Up – One in four preventable collisions involve backing up. Be sure to look before backing up; walk around your car prior to departure.

"Memorial Day Weekend is the first big vacation weekend of the summer," said America's Road Team Captain Jeff Wade (Southeastern Freight Lines), Charleston, SC. "There are additional motorists on the highway, with many in unfamiliar areas. In fact:

More than half the mechanics surveyed agree that most fuel system repairs can be prevented by using high quality gasolines;

Two-thirds of mechanics report using high quality gasoline in their personal vehicle all or some of the time;

7 out of 10 mechanics agree that individuals who keep their cars longer can benefit from using a high quality gasoline; and

Shell is the most recommended brand of gasoline among mechanics.

Furthermore, 97% of mechanics agree that clean fuel injectors and intake valves are important to an engine's optimal performance. That's why Shell developed the New Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines. The new formulation delivers 20 % more active cleaning agents than before, designed to protect the engine's intake valves and fuel injectors from performance-robbing gunk. So no matter what you drive, no other gasoline protects your engine better.

Regular maintenance and the use of high quality gasoline can also help improve fuel efficiency. Knowing this, Shell developed a Smarter Driving Program that shows consumers how they can go farther on less fuel by combining smarter maintenance, actions, and products.

For more information on the benefits of NEW Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines, visit shell.us/ontheroad or find us on Facebook at facebook.com/Shell. Research reveals that motorists rank tires as the second-most important safety feature in vehicles next to brakes, yet only a third of consumers properly check their tire inflation pressure.

Improper air pressure in tires can lead to a multitude of problems – from uneven and accelerated tire wear, to structural damage in a tire. An underinflated tire also has the potential to affect tire performance, including making a vehicle less fuel-efficient. With temperatures rising and vacation travel commencing, the attention given to the care and maintenance of tires should be heightened, according to Goodyear officials.

"Checking tires for proper inflation and tread condition is one of the most critical – and easiest – maintenance procedures for a consumer," said John Peer, vice president of Goodyear Retail. "It doesn't take much time or sophisticated equipment. Drivers can check their tires by themselves, or any of our retail outlets would be happy to provide the service."

Goodyear-owned retail outlets and participating independent Goodyear retailers offer a service in which consumers can stop in without an appointment for a free tire check. This includes an inspection of the tread condition and tire inflation, with air added at no charge if the inflation level is down.

According to research by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), not only do most drivers ignore their tires, most simply do not know enough about how to care for the tires correctly.

Goodyear recommends that motorists should check tire inflation at least monthly or before a long trip. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the owner's manual, not the maximum limit stamped on a tire sidewall.

In addition to proper inflation, according to Peer, another way consumers can potentially benefit from increased fuel efficiency is by choosing a tire such as Goodyear's new Assurance Fuel Max. Available at Goodyear retail outlets, Assurance Fuel Max has a fuel-saving tread compound that helps reduce energy loss as the tire rolls. This helps to save 2,600 miles' worth of gas over the life of a set of tires.* The Fuel Max tire is available for most cars, and for many SUVs and crossovers.

Among other initiatives from Goodyear during National Tire Safety Week are these:

Goodyear outlets will distribute the RMA's "Be Tire Smart, Play Your PART" consumer booklets. Those guides stress the importance of inflation pressure, wheel alignment, tire rotation and visual checks of tire tread.

On www.goodyear.com, visitors will find extensive information on tire care, product selection and more. The "Personal Tire Care" section contains advice on tire pressure and proper inflation, visual inspections, tire repairs, saving fuel and more.

With their lighted message boards, Goodyear's famous blimps continue to spread the tire care message while in flight, urging consumers on the ground to check tire pressure and treadwear.

Goodyear is one of the world's largest tire companies. It employs approximately 73,000 people and manufactures its products in 54 facilities in 22 countries around the world. Its two Innovation Centers in Akron, Ohio and Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg strive to develop state-of-the-art products and services that set the technology and performance standard for the industry. For more information about Goodyear or its products, go to www.goodyear.com.

(*2,600 miles based on a 4% fuel economy improvement on a 65,000-Mile Tread Life Limited Warranty, as compared to the standard Goodyear Assurance tire tested on P195/65R15 size – 2008 Honda Civic. The mobile app, written using HTML5 technology, is now available in BlackBerry App World™ for BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900 and 9930 users.

The RemoteLink app was conceived as a feature for Chevrolet Volt owners to remotely check the status of their vehicle's battery life. From there, the idea grew to leverage OnStar's unique connection to the vehicle, providing drivers with up-to-date vehicle information such as oil level, tire pressure, fuel level and lifetime miles per gallon. The app also offers users remote commands, including remote start, door lock/unlock and horn/light activation.

Last year, OnStar added a navigation enhancement to RemoteLink, providing customers with the ability to search for a destination on their smartphone and send it directly to their vehicle, where they can access the route via OnStar. To achieve this goal, Bridgestone will need fully leverage its technical capabilities and diversify and expand the range of renewable resources it uses in the production of tires and other rubber products. To accomplish this, the Group is diversifying the regions in which it produces natural rubber and expanding the range of reinforced plant fibers it uses. Furthermore, in order to replace fossil resources with renewable materials, the Group is working to develop synthetic rubber, carbon black, and rubber compounding agents that can be created from biomass materials. Looking forward to 2050, the Group will continue to advance the development of these technologies and will report on the progress of these initiatives as appropriate.

The Bridgestone Group is developing a number of technologies that can be applied throughout the value chain, from raw materials to finished products. One goal of these initiatives is to achieve the usage of 100% sustainable materials by leveraging 3R*3 technologies that diversify resources used and utilize renewable resources as well as retread technologies. In addition, the Group is pursuing the development of future tire technologies, such as those that reduce CO2 emissions through improved fuel efficiency. By creating ideal tires using these technologies, the Bridgestone Group will contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

*1 World Rubber Summit (held from May 22 to 24 in 2012), sponsored by the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG), is the world's only global summit for rubber specialists.
