Some concepts taught: loop analysis, number charting, virtual condition, resultant condition, inner/outer boundaries, minimum airspace, maximum wall thickness, maximum interference, minimum and maximum overall dimensions, fixed and floating fastener assembly conditions, projected tolerance zones, the logic of stack-up analysis, statistical tolerancing, etc. Learn a system of logic and mathematics to analyze tolerances; Calculate statistical tolerance using a variety of methods and learn how to re-integrate these tolerances back into the assembly's details, etc.

DC Architectural Firm Contributes to Our Cultural Community

The recent relocation of Perkins+Will, an Architectural firm in DC, left the company with a surplus of furniture and equipment. A majority of the materials went to local arts programs, The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, and The Lorton Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton. Blade Dynamics Sells 25pct to American Superconductor, Dow

Aug. 20, 2010 -- Blade Dynamics, a designer and manufacturer of wind turbine blades, has sold 25 percent of the company to American Superconductor Corp. (AMSC) and Dow Chemical Company. Dow, through its Venture Capital group, made a minority equity investment in Blade Dynamics.

AMSC has acquired its 25 percent stake in Blade Dynamics for $8 million in cash and will have one seat on the Blade Dynamics Board of Directors. In addition to providing AMSC Windtec licensees with a differentiated blade offering, AMSC expects that its investment could expand the company's sales opportunities with other wind turbine manufacturers around the world. AMSC also expects that Blade Dynamics technology will provide a blade platform for the company's 10 MW SeaTitan superconductor wind turbines.

Louisiana Economic Development also announced that it is providing an incentive package to help Blade Dynamics establish and operate a manufacturing facility in New Orleans. This incentive package is worth up to $30 million and is contingent on the company meeting certain capital investment and job creation milestones. The operation is expected to add at least 600 jobs to the local economy over the next decade.

Duke Energy Backs Out of UNC Wind Energy Project

Aug. 20, 2010 -- Duke Energy Carolinas announced it will no longer pursue a plan to place up to three demonstration wind turbines in the Pamlico Sound.

Instead, the company and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will refocus their collaboration to study and help enable large-scale offshore wind development on the ocean side of the North Carolina coast.

Since the project was announced in September 2009, in-depth analysis and engineering have been conducted. Duke Energy concluded that the fixed costs associated with permitting, design and construction of the small-scale coastal wind demonstration project were no longer economically viable.

The relatively high fixed cost of developing, permitting and installing the first turbine makes a small demonstration project much less cost-effective than a large-scale project. For example, the Duke Energy team determined the cost of the first turbine to be $88 million, while the second turbine would cost $14 million.

Wind Energy Company Vestas Lowers Outlook

Aug. 19, 2010 -- A weak second quarter contributed to wind energy company Vestas cutting its earnings outlook for the year.

In Q2, Vestas reported a net loss of 119 million euro, after a net profit of 43 million euro in the same period last year.

The wind turbine manufacturer cut its sales outlook from seven billion euro to six billion, with an operating profit of around six percent, half of what the company previously predicted.

Despite the loss, Vestas has grown its workforce by six percent from the first quarter to nearly 22,400.

Vestas Gets Order for 140 Wind Turbines in Australia

Aug. 12, 2010 -- Vestas has won a contract to deliver 140 V112-3.0 MW wind turbines to AGL Energy Limited and Meridian's 420 MW Macarthur project, located in Australia.

The Macarthur Wind Farm will become the home of the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere, with 420 MW of clean and renewable energy generation capacity coming from 140 new V112-3.0 MW wind turbines.

AGL is a publicly listed electricity generator and retailer operating in the Australian market, while Meridian is the largest state-owned renewable energy generator and retailer in New Zealand and a renewable energy developer in Australia.

The Macarthur site is located in the Western District of Victoria, Australia, between the towns of Macarthur, Hawkesdale and Penshurst.

The first turbines are expected on site during Q3 2011 with the whole project expected fully installed by the first half of 2013.
