Food Manufacturers Get Proactive against BPA

Nov. 3, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ -- Health officials from many nations continued to reach a consensus in Toronto about the safety of the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) in food packaging, but the food industry already seems to have come up with its verdict: ditch it.

The UN health agency convened the meeting in Canada, the nation that has done the most so far to limit the use of BPA in food packaging. Authorities will continue their sessions here all week.

Meanwhile, some of the world's biggest food companies are moving toward the elimination of BPA from cans and other food packages, prompted by consumer concerns that BPA can cause heart disease, cancer and other illnesses.

The world's biggest food manufacturer, Nestle, has announced it will stop putting BPA into U.S. products within three years. Heinz says it is at "an advanced stage" in removing BPA from U.K. baby food. General Mills already has eliminated BPA from some products, while Campbell has undertaken significant research.

BPA toughens the packaging of many tins, glass jars and plastic bottles and the casings of electronics gadgets such as TVs, mobile phones and laptop computers.

Many scientists believe BPA is a risk for breast and prostate cancer, heart disease, brain retardation, impotence and infertility because of hormonal affects.

So far the European Union's Food Safety Agency has continued to defend BPA as safe, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has expressed some concerns.

More than 20 US states have introduced legislation to restrict BPA use.

Breast Cancer Treatment in Large, Fewer Doses of Radiotherapy Lessens Side Effects

February 2, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The Associated Press reports that at least 27 of the 104 nuclear reactors in the US have been leaking a cancer-causing by-product of nuclear fission, with the leaks mostly occurring through deteriorating underground pipes.

The carcinogen tritium has been discovered in potentially dangerous levels (more than three times the federal safety standard) in the groundwater around the nuclear plants, most recently at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear plant.

Tritium has been linked to cancer if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin in large amounts, and the concentration of tritium found in groundwater has caught the attention of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

UK Government to Propose 70 Million GBP for Asbestos Cancer Sufferers

January 26, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The UK government will present trade unions with a 70 million GBP package of programs to help workers who suffer from asbestos-related diseases.

In addition to providing funding for a research center and more money for mesothelioma sufferers, the government will call on insurers to fund dying patients who are no longer covered by their employers' insurance.

At Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, traces of asbestos have been uncovered on campus. While removing the nests of birds from the attic, Greek Life officials found asbestos in the attic of the Theta Xi fraternity's chapter house. Further testing on the material must be done to confirm what percentage of asbestos is in the substance. However, according to David Wallace, coordinator for Greek housing programs, none of the residents in the frat house are in any danger.

Officials from the Greek Life Office (GLO) have taken air quality samples from the living areas of the house. A contractor has been hired to seal off the asbestos-containing area and remove the material. "We don't know [if] it's dangerous," Wallace said. "We decided it was better to just remove it." He added that the removal project will take about a week, and it will "have little to no impact on the men living inside the chapter house."

The Environmental Protection Agency issued a ban and phase-out on asbestos in 1989, which was overturned by a ruling in 1991. Asbestos exposure has been conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive form of cancer of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year. Patients routinely develop mesothelioma decades after being exposed to asbestos. Most patients lose their battle with this cancer in as little as two years after being diagnosed.

Obama's Healthcare Debate and Dr. Chao's 8 Herbal Ounces of Prevention

CLAREMONT, Calif., Oct. 1 /EIN Presswire/ -- President Obama's healthcare reform effort dominates American news.

From raucous meetings to Sen. Max Baucus' suggested legislation, front-page stories, headlines, op-eds, talk radio, TV talking heads and blogs chronicle and wrangle over proposals to change America's medical insurance. Republicans fight Democrats, liberals battle conservatives.

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson interrupts the President during a joint session of Congress and "teabagger" protesters denounce Obama for plotting "death panels" and big government takeover of America's healthcare. Progressives endorse single payer, while the public option, a co-op plan, doing nothing at all, etc., are debated.
Amidst all this sound and fury something crucial is overlooked: prevention. One commentator who hasn't neglected this essential factor is comedian Bill Maher, host of HBO's "Real Time." During the presidential race Maher observed on his cable TV program, "none of the [candidates'] plans address the real problem. We won't stop being sick until we stop making ourselves sick. Because there is a point where even the most universal government health program can't help you. They can't outlaw unhealthy food or alcohol... "

Maher added, "the government isn't your nanny." Indeed, even if Washington insures everyone, individuals pursuing unhealthy lifestyles can fall ill. As Maher observed: "Fifty years ago, children didn't even get Type 2 Diabetes. Now, it's an emerging epidemic. As are a long list of ailments which used to be rare... " (A 2004 Journal of the American Medical Association report found: "Higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with ... weight gain and an increased risk for development of type 2 diabetes in women... ")

In his televised rant, Maher asserted, "diet and exercise don't fail ... [A] new Duke University study showed exercise ... is just as effective a cure for depression as Paxil and Zoloft ... [I]f Republicans can sell the idea of preemptive war, Democrats have to at least get us interested in ... preventive medicine."
The HBO humorist's notion is older than the U.S. In 18th-century colonial America Dr. Benjamin Franklin noted: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." While universal health insurance may be worthwhile, individuals must also be active participants in their own wellness, instead of passive victims complicit in their sicknesses.

The Chloe Duyck Memorial Fund was established for Chloe by her parents Michelle and Joel Duyck in 2005. Chloe was born on August 30, 2004, and lost her short battle with a congenital heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), on September 3, 2004. Chloe had endured two open-heart surgeries as well as several other procedures to try and save her life, but to no avail. The Chloe Duyck Memorial Fund was established to support research in the field of congenital heart disease.
