Workshops on water intakes and air pollution control offered in Dubai

Alden Research Laboratory Inc. (Alden) is bringing together global experts to train desalination and power plant engineers how to manage water intake debris concerns and air pollution control projects.

The first workshop, to be held October 3-4, 2011, will be focused on helping engineers to understand how to evaluate the various water intake design and debris management options for new or existing plants and how to ensure proper performance and minimized maintenance. The second workshop, to be held October 4-5, 2011, will address the various choices of air pollution control equipment for oil- and gas-fired power plants that are required for meeting emissions standards.

Jellyfish, algae, and other debris have been causing increasing maintenance concerns at water intakes in the Middle East. At the same time, there are escalating concerns over emissions on the Arabian Peninsula, though the choices over equipment selection can seem confusing and daunting. These converging demands have led to requests for the workshops.

Russia to Build Turkey's Nuclear Plant

May 13, 2010 -- Although South Korea had been making gains in securing deals to build nuclear plants in the Middle East, Russia has emerged as the winner for Turkey's $20 billion nuclear power plant.

The nuclear plant, Turkey's first, will be built at Akkuyu on the country's Mediterranean coast. The awarding of the contract comes despite a Turkish court nullifying a tender last year by a Russian-led group to build four reactors at Akkuyu.

Russia will own a controlling stake in the plant, making it the first Russian-owned plant outside of Russia.

Vermont Senate to Vote on Fate of Yankee Nuclear Plant

February 24, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, which has found itself at the center of a chemical leak controversy, will have its fate decided by the Vermont state senate today.

In a last-ditch effort to influence lawmakers, Curt Hebert Jr., vice-president of Entergy Corp., which owns the plant, offered to sell cheap electricity to Vermont for three years if the reactor's license is renewed. The renewal period is for 20 years.

The Vermont Yankee plant has been caught in a firestorm of late after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission revealed the plant had a leak in 2005 and that the incident may have been covered up. On Jan. 7, Entergy disclosed that tritium had leaked from the plant, and although health officials said the leak poses no threat, protesters are raising their concerns about the plant and Entergy.

Obama Goes Nuclear; Proposes $8 Billion Loan for Georgia Power Plant

February 17, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ For the first time in 30 years, the US is looking to build a nuclear power plant as President Barack Obama proposed an $8 billion loan to build a power station in Georgia.

The loan guarantees would go toward constructing two reactors in Burke, Georgia, where there is an existing nuclear facility.

"It's a plant that will create thousands of construction jobs in the next few years and some 800 permanent jobs, well-paying permanent jobs, in the years to come. And this is only the beginning," Obama said.

Obama noted that the US was falling behind in nuclear energy production. He said of the 56 nuclear reactors being built around the world, 21 are in China, six in South Korea, and five in India. South Korea has also signed contracts recently to build plants in the UAE and Turkey.

More Than 25 pct of US Nuclear Reactors Leaking Carcinogen into Groundwater

February 2, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The Associated Press reports that at least 27 of the 104 nuclear reactors in the US have been leaking a cancer-causing by-product of nuclear fission, with the leaks mostly occurring through deteriorating underground pipes.

The carcinogen tritium has been discovered in potentially dangerous levels (more than three times the federal safety standard) in the groundwater around the nuclear plants, most recently at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear plant.

Tritium has been linked to cancer if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin in large amounts, and the concentration of tritium found in groundwater has caught the attention of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

South Korea Making Major Nuclear Power Plant Push in Middle East

January 18, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ South Korea and its corporations are making major inroads in the Middle East to build nuclear power plants in the region.

The country and Daewoo have reportedly signed a deal with Jordan to build an atomic research reactor for $178 million. This contract comes on the heels of a deal worth $40 billion to build nuclear power plants in the United Arab Emirates. Next up for the country is a potential order from Turkey that could be worth as much as $3.5 billion.

South Korea's aspirations don't stop there. It wants to secure $400 billion in orders for nuclear power plants by 2030.
