Auto Industry Shifts Focus to Green Cars

Dec. 9, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ - Mass-market electric cars are set to hit showrooms in select US cities next year, ushering in a new era of green vehicles.

The unveiling of electric and electric-hybrid vehicles will be regional, starting such states as California, New York, Texas and Washington, before becoming available across America. A second wave of electric vehicles is planned for 2012.

In all, nearly 20 new hybrid or electric cars are scheduled to make their debut in 2011, including the Volt from Chevrolet and the Leaf from Nissan. May 11, 2010 - In a fiscal year marred with recalls and lawsuits, Toyota still managed to report a huge profit these last 12 months and expects to earn even more in the coming fiscal year.

Toyota reported a $2.2 billion annual profit, up from a $4.4 billion loss the previous year. This $6.6 billion swing happened despite the recall of nearly 10 million cars and a 7.7% dip in global sales.

The company expects its net profit to increase by 48% to $3.3 billion in the fiscal year that ends in March 2011.

Report: GM to Repay Bailout Loan Early

April 20, 2010 - The US government is set to get more of its bailout money back, this time from the auto industry. General Motors will repay ahead of schedule $6.7 billion it borrowed from the government, the Associated Press reports.

The details are to be announced Wednesday by GM CEO Ed Whitacre, a source told the AP on condition of anonymity. GM received $52 billion in aid, with $6.7 billion considered a direct loan, of which GM had already repaid $2 billion.

The repayment of the loan will come five years ahead of schedule.

California Revs Up Plug-In Hybrid Trial Project

January 29, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ In an effort to study plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) performance, the California Department of General Services will take part in a two-year experiment to determine the benefits of driving PHEVs.

Funded by the California Energy Commission, the study will involve 50 converted Toyota Prius vehicles and will examine data related to automobile performance, what efficiencies are gained and how much greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced.

The state's motor fleet includes more than 50,000 vehicles, and the study will help determine if the state can or should make the move from gas to hybrid-electric vehicles.
