Auto Industry Shifts Focus to Green Cars

Dec. 9, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ - Mass-market electric cars are set to hit showrooms in select US cities next year, ushering in a new era of green vehicles.

The unveiling of electric and electric-hybrid vehicles will be regional, starting such states as California, New York, Texas and Washington, before becoming available across America. A second wave of electric vehicles is planned for 2012.

In all, nearly 20 new hybrid or electric cars are scheduled to make their debut in 2011, including the Volt from Chevrolet and the Leaf from Nissan. The hybrids are rated to run for up to 40 miles on electricity before the gasoline motor kicks in to power the battery, while the electric-only cars can travel 100 miles on a single charge.

Ford Looks to Use Solar Energy to Power Assembly Plant

Aug. 12, 2010 -- Ford Motor Company, Detroit Edison, Xtreme Power and the state of Michigan will collaborate to build a solar power generation system at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant. The move will save the company an estimated $160,000 per year in energy costs.

The renewable energy captured by the project's primary solar energy system will help power the production of Ford's Focus and Focus Electric vehicles. A secondary, smaller solar energy system will be integrated at a later date to power lighting systems at Michigan Assembly. Installation of the system begins later this year.

Ford will work with Detroit Edison to install a 500 kilowatt (kw) solar photovoltaic panel system that will be integrated with a 750kw energy storage facility that can store 2 million watt-hours of energy using batteries. Xtreme Power of Austin, Texas, is supplying its Dynamic Power Resource on-site energy storage and power management system.

The solar energy installation is part of Detroit Edison's pilot SolarCurrents program that calls for photovoltaic systems to be installed on customer rooftops or property over the next five years to generate 15 megawatts of electricity throughout Southeast Michigan.

The Michigan Assembly project is made possible by a $3 million investment by Detroit Edison's SolarCurrents program, a $2 million grant from the Michigan Public Service Commission in support of the state's smart-grid initiative, and approximately $800,000 from Ford.

Toyota Buys Stake in Tesla Motors

May 21, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ -- Tesla Motors, the small manufacturer trying to become a big player in the emerging electric vehicle market, got a big boost today with the news that Toyota is buying a $50 million stake in the company.

Tesla also announced that it will buy a closed Toyota factory in California to build its vehicles and that Tesla and Toyota will cooperate in developing electric cars, parts, production systems and engineering support.

The deal is expected to help Toyota sell electric cars in the US and improve its US image after the disastrous recalls it has recently been forced to undertake.

Report: GM to Repay Bailout Loan Early

April 20, 2010 - The US government is set to get more of its bailout money back, this time from the auto industry. General Motors will repay ahead of schedule $6.7 billion it borrowed from the government, the Associated Press reports.

The details are to be announced Wednesday by GM CEO Ed Whitacre, a source told the AP on condition of anonymity. GM received $52 billion in aid, with $6.7 billion considered a direct loan, of which GM had already repaid $2 billion.

The repayment of the loan will come five years ahead of schedule.

UK to Subsidize 25pct of All Electric Car Purchases

February 25, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The British government stepped up its promotion of the electric auto industry by announcing a large subsidy program and an infrastructure plan for battery recharging.

Starting in 2011, the program offers a 5000 GBP rebate to private individuals and fleet buyers who buy an "ultra-low carbon car." The government is also committed to building recharging hubs.

In total, 230 million GBP are being made available in the subsidy program in addition to the 30 million GBP to be spent on hubs, called "Plugged-In Places," in car parks, supermakets and select areas. Up to 11,000 Plugged-In Places are scheduled to be built.

Tesla Motors Plans IPO; Could Raise $100 million

February 2, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Tesla Motors, one of the leaders of the new electric car industry and maker of the Tesla Roadster, has announced that it plans to go public.

The date for the initial public offering of stock for the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company has not been set, but it is expected that the stock sale could generate as much as $100 million.

Tesla Motors says that it has sold nearly 1,000 of its Roadster electric vehicles to date; each one costs more than $100,00 and can go for nearly 250 miles on a single charge. Tesla's first sedan, the "Model S," is expected to be available in 2012 with a base price of around $50,000.

The IPO would make Tesla Motors the first US auto company to go public in more than 50 years.

Ford Makes First Profit in Four Years

January 29, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ For Ford, the turnaround is now. The automaker has posted a $2.7 billion profit for 2009 thanks to its past labor restructuring, popular new models and the collapse of GM and Chrysler.

Compared to the other US automakers, Ford was ahead of the trend in mid-size cars and small SUVs and has found success in the competitive European market. Ford's own financing company also helped boost profits in a tight consumer-lending market.

Although profit was up for Ford, the company saw a 14 percent decline in revenue in 2009. Because of its dealings with the auto unions, Ford sees higher profits on each car sold. The company now turns its focus to its debt, as it mortgaged almost all of its assets before the economic downturn.
