Airbus A320s Top 50 Million Flights

Airbus wins commitments worth US$15.3 billion at ILA Berlin Air Show

10 June 2010 -- During the 2010 ILA Berlin Air Show, Airbus announced commitments across its broad product range covering a total of 67 aircraft, valued at over US$15.3 billion. These commitments include firm orders for 32 A380 aircraft worth around US$11.5 billion, plus Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreements for a further 35 aircraft totaling around $3.8 billion.

The highlight of the show was the firm order from Emirates Airline for 32 A380s. This latest order from the Dubai based carrier brings its total orders for the A380 to 90 aircraft. Emirates has supported the development of the A380 from the earliest days, and this order - the single largest A380 order ever - is an unequivocal endorsement of both the A380's exceptional in-service performance, and also its role as a market-growth enabler for airlines that operate it.

In addition to this firm order, commitments reached at the show included MoUs for 35 aircraft worth approximately $3.8 billion, from:

* TAM Airlines for five A350-900s worth almost $1.3 billion, plus 20 A320 Family aircraft worth around $1.7 billion (comprising six A319s, seven A320s and seven A321s);
* Finnair for five A321s worth $485 million. These aircraft will come equipped with the new performance-enhancing "Sharklet" wingtip device option;
* Germania for five A319s worth $372 million.

Honeywell Converter Offers Reliable Measurement In Sustained Temperatures Up To 225⁰C

Converter Reduces Operator and Lifecycle Costs

PHOENIX, June 8, 2010 -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) introduced today a new High Temperature Analog-to-Digital 12-bit Converter (HTADC12) enabling reliable measurement and control in high temperature environments like those experienced in deep drilling operations and inside large jet engines.

"Honeywell's HTADC12 is four times faster and has four times better resolution when compared to competing products that operate in similar demanding high temperature applications," said Keith Nootbaar, senior director of Microelectronics and Precision Sensors, Honeywell Aerospace. "The HTADC12 can be used in energy exploration and large jet engine control applications for dependable, efficient measurement and control."

The HTADC12 provides 12 bit resolution at 100,000 samples per second for temperatures up to 225oC. The component can sustain reliable 225oC operation for five years or more, and is scheduled for release in August 2010.

Oil, gas and geothermal drilling costs increase based on well depth and tool failures, and accompanying downtime is particularly costly. HTADC12's ability to operate reliably at extreme temperatures increases drill time, and reduces operator cost.

The HTADC12 also finds use in the large jet engine control application, where it provides direct measurement and control as part of instrumentation and control modules mounted at various high temperature locations throughout the engine, which help reduce lifecycle costs.

Key process technology for the HTADC12 was developed in the mid-2000s by Honeywell as part of the Deep Trek Program, funded by the Department of Energy, and supported from an industry consortium that included major energy exploration companies.

American Airlines Braces for Strike; British Airways Walkout Continues

May 26, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ -- Talks between American Airlines and the flight attendants union have broken down with no new sessions scheduled. Airline management has begun preparations for a system-wide strike.

In an email sent Tuesday to company managers, American Airlines asked for employees to volunteer as flight attendants in case of a work stoppage. The e-mail said volunteers might work more than six straight days, and they "may encounter challenging interactions with other crew members."

American's predicament comes on the heels of a British Airways walk-out. BA workers have been on strike since Monday, disrupting flights at Heathrow and other airports.

EU: Iceland Volcano Aftermath Will Cost €1.5 to €2.5 Billion

April 29, 2010 - The volcanic ash that grounded around 100,000 flights over Europe will cost EU airline industry as much as €2.5 billion, according to Siim Kallas, the EU Transport Commissioner.

To help airlines attempt to recoup some of these losses, Kallas said at a news briefing that governments would be able to waive current restrictions on night flights and defer air traffic controller charges.

Kallas also said Europe needs to accelerate its common airspace project, which will streamline the 27 national airspaces to just nine by 2012.
