APPLE VALLEY, Calif., May 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Hundreds of people showed up to Mojave Water Agency on Saturday, May 12 to celebrate water awareness month at Apple Valley Ranchos Water Company's (AVR) first annual Spring Conservation Fair.

The event boasted dozens of booths, workshops, landscape demonstrations, children's activities, awards, and more. Local businesses and organizations sponsored the event donating thousands of dollars in prizes.

This year, the fair served as voting headquarters for the AVR People Choice Awards—a before and after contest open to water conservation trailblazers who turned their yards into beautiful, high-desert water conservation landscapes.

"It is a spirited event that created a lot fun and learning," said General Manager Scott Weldy. "The landscape irrigation workshop signed up 100 people within a few hours."

Apple Valley's award-winning Police Volunteer group Citizens On Patrol (COPS) provided no-cost fingerprinting to families with children. The Apple Valley Fire Protection District was also in attendance. The company forecasts a very successful year in 2013 too; they will soon begin gearing up for next year.

WALTHAM, Mass., May 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Tecogen Inc. today announced that American DG Energy Inc. has purchased 13 Tecogen combined heat and power (CHP) units for use in a variety of new energy production projects announced earlier this month by ADGE. The Tecogen systems comprise eight CM-75 (75 kW) and five InVerde (100 kW) units.

Six of the CM-75 units will comprise a cogeneration plant to be placed at Tracy Towers residential apartment complex in New York. Another CM-75 unit will be sited at the West Village Apartments in Connecticut. The five InVerde units will be installed in the United Kingdom by EuroSite Power, a European subsidiary of American DG Energy.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., May 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- AFS BioOil has announced that its state-of-the art facility located at a wastewater treatment plant in the San Francisco Bay Area is open for tours for strategic partners and customers. The volume of the system is 150 m³; the annual nameplate capacity is 55 tons of algae biomass. The installed bioreactor is a full-scale system that proves scalability, biomass cultivation yields, and operating costs.

It has been long believed that closed systems also known as photobioreactors are prohibitively expensive for industrial algae cultivation. The facility that the company has built proves the opposite. The proprietary technology and the process make the system almost ten times less expensive than any other photobioreactor-based microalgae cultivation system on the market. This is in part achieved by integrating other technologies into the plant, so that they share a common infrastructure that would otherwise be required for each. The ideal fully integrated 500 acre plant, as the team sees it, will have algae production integrated with other biotech technologies such as microbial fermentation and generation of clean waste heat based electricity. The team, together with its partners, claims to have the technology to make it happen.

AFS BioOil forecasts to produce biodiesel commercially for under $2 per gallon. The company's unique system allows an algae operator to control key cultivation parameters, which improves biomass production yields and minimizes operating and processing costs. Another great advantage of AFS technologies is that they can work for different algae strains and different operating conditions. The bioreactors are designed with options to produce clean water and collect oxygen enriched gas.

A prolific ceremony was held today to award the winners of the We Are Water Foundation GCC Student Design Contest. The regional competition was launched on the 22^nd of March 2012, and requested Students of Art, Interior Design & Architecture faculties to design a poster on the relationship between Food and Water. 'We Are Water Foundation' is an initiative of Roca, which aims to raise awareness of water as a unique, limited resource, and aims to take action to minimize the negative effects of the lack of adequate water resources through education, health and research, and the construction of new infrastructures.

The ceremony was held at the newly launched facility of The Change Initiative, a 55,000 square feet facility dedicated to sustainable solutions for the home and at work. The awards ceremony raised awareness about the relationship between water and food and the need to reduce our water consumption through a display of a selection of the best Graphic Designs made by students of the faculty of Art, Interior Design and Architecture of the leading universities in the GCC.

Students from universities such as American University of Sharjah, Zayed University (Dubai/Abu Dhabi), Al Ghurair University, American University in Dubai, Ajman University of Science & Technology, Al Hosn University, British University in Dubai, and King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, have been invited to participate in the contest. The Heads of Faculties of Interior Design & Architecture of these universities have given their support to the contest.

A Jury made up of DEWA, Architects and Interior Designers of the American Institute for Architects (AIA Middle East), Royal Institute for Architects (RIBA Middle East Chapter), the Association for Professional Interior Designers (APID), the Emirates Green Building Council members, UAE Business Council for Sustainable Development and The Change Initiative selected the Winning Graphic Design and the runners up.

The agreement will provide EuroSite Power with pounds Sterling 1,500,000 over the 15 year contract.

EuroSite Power will produce space heat and hot water for the hotel's health club. The CHP system will offset 221 tons of carbon emissions annually while generating up to 2 MWh of energy each year. Cedar Court will pay only for the energy used by the facility and avoid all capital, installation and operating costs of the system.

Department of Energy (DOE) SMR investment funds will be awarded to SMR projects that have the most potential and promise to be licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and achieve commercial operation by 2022. The cost-share agreements will span a five-year period and, subject to Congressional appropriations, provide a total investment of approximately $900 million, with at least 50 percent provided by private industry. Westinghouse submitted its application to the DOE last Friday, May 18, on behalf of the Ameren Missouri-led NexStart SMR Alliance. The addition of Electric Boat and Burns & McDonnell to the Westinghouse team will further support and provide additional confidence to the Westinghouse SMR Project in its pursuit of the DOE funding opportunity.

LAKEWOOD, Calif., May 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- California Senate members from both sides of the isle voted today by a margin of 31-4 to approve Senate Bill 1386, a measure that would clarify existing language in the California Water Code, making it explicitly clear that the Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD) would maintain the sole responsibility for storing and managing groundwater in southeast Los Angeles County, thereby avoiding costly duplication of water services among public agencies. The bill was introduced earlier this year by South Bay veteran lawmaker, Senator Alan Lowenthal.

"Today's bipartisan decision shows that California lawmakers can work together to make the right decisions for the people in California," said WRD Board President Albert Robles. "The vote by the California Senate will help water providers avoid wasteful redundancy and the unnecessary high costs that would otherwise be passed onto the ratepayers. WRD has been responsible for managing regional groundwater since 1959, so there's no reason to make things more complicated and costly."

Senate Bill 1386 provides necessary clarity regarding the roles of existing water agencies related to the use of groundwater storage. This clarity is based on long held responsibilities that different agencies provide. WRD, a public agency, is tasked with storing, maintaining and refilling the Central and West Basins from which water pumpers obtain water and provide to residents and businesses for drinking water. Other agencies, like the Central Basin Municipal Water District are designated providers of imported water from outside the region. As a result, imported water is about 4 times more expensive than groundwater. SB 1386 keeps those roles distinct.

"The vote from the California Senate is one more step toward making the region self-reliant," said Jim Glancy, Vice-President of the Central Basin Water Association. "Imported water is becoming less reliable and the rates are rapidly rising. Having the ability to store water underground for later use by our residents is a critical part of future planning and increases the flexibility of local groundwater resources. This bill removes barriers by making clear each water agency's role toward achieving that goal."

According to Rob Beste, a member of the West Basin Water Association, "the bill will help the region maintain affordable water rates for the future by utilizing unused groundwater capacity. We are moving in the right direction and avoiding inefficient overlaps in service."

Long Beach Water Department General Manager Kevin Wattier said the Senate's decision "represents a huge victory for the region and the state. Having clarity in the language of the Water Code regarding water storage will avoid conflict and confusion, giving us the ability to store water in the few years when there is a surplus for use in the many years when we have drought. This will go a long way to reduce our reliance on imported water while assuring our water needs can be met."

The bill now moves to the State Assembly for consideration.

The Water Replenishment District of Southern California is the regional groundwater management agency that protects and preserves the quantity and quality of groundwater for two of the most utilized urban basins in the State of California. The service area is home to over ten percent of California's population residing in 43 cities in southern Los Angeles County. WRD is governed by a publicly elected Board of Directors which includes Willard H. Murray, Jr., Robert Katherman, Lillian Kawasaki, Sergio Calderon, and Albert Robles.
