In an unusual blend of automotive and musical worlds, three Detroit-area Techno musicians used a 2013 Ford Fusion to make original tracks using the sounds produced by the car. They recorded everything from doors slamming to the soft back-and-forth of the windshield wipers.

The musicians took the sounds back to their studio along with a sound bank of Fusion chimes and tones and got to work. Using loop machines, synthesizers and their own creativity, each artist composed an original song featuring Fusion as an instrument.

Ford was there to capture each artist putting the songs together and explaining his respective process.

The results are tunes that groove with the same drive and energy that thousands of Techno fans who descend upon Detroit this Memorial Day weekend will hear. Each Fusion musician, provided by Paxahau – organizers of the Movement Electronic Music Festival – produced a unique song that transformed the everyday sounds of the car into a work of art. The trunk slam was looped to mimic the iconic kick-drum popular in Detroit Techno, the strong hum of the 2.0-liter hybrid engine is used as an overtone that wails with meditative resonance and the seat belt reminder plays as a melodic syncopation.

"This project worked so well because Techno music, by its nature, is very similar to the makeup of a car," explains Joshua Harrison, contributing musician and a performer in the upcoming festival. "In both cases, there are lots of little pieces mechanically put together. Just like a car, a Techno song has many elements that serve their own small purpose, and the masters of the craft are those who can put it all together and make everything work as one solid piece."

The Fusion music is ripe for melodic composition thanks in part to the dedication of Ford engineers who work painstakingly to ensure the smart technology of the car's sounds is specific and evokes appropriate responses from the driver and passengers.

Engineers write two to three note tones and conduct studies with listening groups to determine the correct sound for potential situations.

Alexander Petniunas, Ford sound quality technical expert, says that audible warning is intended to prompt the operator to respond the right way. Engineers work with four grades of severity. The high pitch staccato sound, for example, is considered the most severe, whereas the three note welcome chimes are meant to deliver a comfortable greeting. The sounds are designed to conjure an emotional response. The project worked out so well, said Petniunas, because music does the same thing.

Petniunas says some sounds are designed to be harsh to the human ear, like the loud warning that plays in cross-traffic alert technology, while other sounds like the reverse alert are softer in order to prompt action on the part of the driver but not cause alarm. Hundreds of sounds are analyzed.

"I love that the musicians were so infatuated with the sound of the Fusion's door slams," says Ramita Chawla, Ford sound quality engineer. "It's a testament to all the hard work that went into engineering a solid 'thunk' from the doors over the past few years.

"The level of detail that goes into developing sound quality in several of the vehicle components is often overlooked," she adds, "though subconsciously, these sounds significantly influence customers' perception of quality. I think it's pretty cool to hear pleasant sounds from various parts of the car coming together harmoniously to create these musical tracks."

Ford and the Movement Electronic Music Festival have a friendship spanning more than a decade – beginning when the festival was still in its infancy.

Ford Motor Company set a new company record in the U.S. last year by sourcing more than $5 billion with minority-owned companies and $1 billion with women-owned firms, reinforcing its leadership position as a strong supporter of supplier diversity.

For the third consecutive year, Ford exceeded its goal of sourcing 10 percent of its U.S. production and nonproduction purchases with diverse suppliers.

In 2011, Ford purchased $5.08 billion in goods and services from its tier-one minority-owned businesses (MBEs), a 34 percent increase from $3.8 billion in 2010. Ford purchased $1.06 billion from its tier-one women-owned businesses (WBEs), an increase of 22 percent from $866 million in 2010. The increases reflect higher vehicle production and incremental new business of $661 million for existing diverse suppliers.

Ford's commitment to Go Further extends to its entire supply chain network. Ford's tier-one suppliers spent $1.66 billion with minority-owned businesses in 2011, up from $1.29 billion in 2010.

Joint Technology Framework

Ford is also making progress with another component of its commitment to minority- and women- owned businesses, the Joint Technology Framework (JTF). Established in 2008, JTF is a special program aimed at improving suppliers' technical expertise through access to the company's intellectual assets and other support. Diverse suppliers are the first beneficiaries of JTF.

One of the first companies to bring a JTF project to fruition is Flex-N-Gate Corporation, a minority-owned company located in Urbana, Ill. Flex-N-Gate is a global manufacturer of metal and plastic components used throughout the automotive industry.

As a result of the JTF program, Flex-N-Gate has introduced "two-shot molding" to support Ford's global CD platform. This is a process that efficiently and consistently molds two materials in a single press cycle, allowing customers to design more complex plastic parts with improved accuracy. Ford worked with Flex-N-Gate to adopt two-shot molding in order for Flex-N-Gate to maintain state-of-the-art capability. Technical support was provided in the form of design, testing and packaging.

The technology will be first used on the 2013 Ford Fusion, which goes on sale in North America and South America later this year (known as Mondeo in Argentina), and subsequently on the 2013 Lincoln MKZ, which also enters the market later in 2012.

The two-shot molding process has enabled Flex-N-Gate to expand its technical capabilities, establish a new commodity and increase the opportunity for new business, both at Ford for derivative products and at other automakers.

Speed Limiters on Semis Show Impressive Safety Benefits

Extensive research shows that installing and using speed limiters, also called SLs or speed governors, in large commercial trucks provides a "profound safety benefit."

May 24, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In late March 2012, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, announced study findings important for the future of commercial trucking safety. Extensive research showed that installing speed limiters, also called SLs or speed governors, on large commercial trucks provides a "profound safety benefit."

Profound indeed -- the study concluded that such devices reportedly reduce crash rates by half.

An SL is an electronic device that keeps a truck engine below a programmed speed limit. SLs are already voluntarily used by some trucking companies for safety and to slow down truck wear and tear. All new trucks come equipped with SLs, but the devices are not always turned on.

Supporters

Speed-limiter devices are supported by the American Trucking Associations, the biggest U.S. trucking-industry trade organization that advocates for trucking interests at the state and federal levels. In fact, the ATA has asked the federal government to order that all large trucks made after 1992 use speed limiters. ATA President Bill Graves calls speed the "single greatest contributor to highway crashes."

Important Statistics

The study's summary cites governmental findings that underscore the obvious danger of a multi-ton vehicle hurtling down the highway at excessive speed -- defined as either more than the posted speed limit, or too fast for road or weather conditions:

- In 2009, speeding was a factor in 8 percent of reported semi-truck accidents.

- In 2006, almost a quarter of all commercial-truck crashes and more than 10 percent of large-truck accidents with passenger vehicles were reported to involve travel speeds unsafe for the conditions.

Sobering. According to thetruckersreport.com, the legal weight limit for an 18-wheeler is 40 tons (with some receiving permits to drive even heavier), compared with the average weight for a car of about 5,000 pounds.

Study Findings

The current study is actually phase two of a larger project. For this phase, the FMCSA called on the American Transportation Research Institute and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to carry out the research. One of the main objectives was to "identify SL effects in reducing the severity and frequency of crashes." Among other things, the study reviewed truck-carrier data from the years 2007 to 2009 involving about 138,000 trucks and more than 15,000 crashes.

Data analysis was careful and complex. Ultimately, the study concluded that "results across analyses indicated a strong, positive safety benefit for SLs."

Future of Speed Limiters

Speed limiters seem here to stay. Truckers are already voluntarily using them and the results of the federal study would seem to support the possibility of governmental trucking regulations being strengthened to require more SL use. Such a regulatory move is being aggressively pushed by the ATA, the Truckload Carriers Association and safety advocates.

ATA, Road Safe America and trucking carriers filed formal petitions with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requesting SL regulations. In early 2011, the NHTSA combined the petitions and announced it would begin the official federal rulemaking process. The agency indicated it was motivated by responses received in a previous request for public comments on the proposal to require SLs in large, commercial trucks. The proposal discussed was to cap the speed of such trucks at 68 mph.

The public comments (almost 4,000) included support from private citizens with experience in truck accidents either personally, or through close relatives and friends, as well as from some trucking companies and road-safety advocates. In addition to safety, another strong reason for SL support is fuel efficiency and environmental impact.

A variety of grounds for challenging the SL-mandate proposal was also included in the comments, especially from independent truckers. Reasons for opposition included the high cost of SL equipment (which the current study disagreed with) and objection to cars being exempt from the requirement.

The agency indicated it would publish a "Notice of Proposed Rulemaking" in 2012, which would begin the extensive and detailed procedures associated with the creation of federal regulations. But whether the rule is actually passed will remain to be seen depending on what happens in the rulemaking process, said the agency.

Teens Have Unrealistic Views About Distracted Driving, Study Finds

A Bridgestone Americas study finds that teenage drivers have distorted views about distracted-driving accidents.

May 24, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Distracted driving is a problem that affects even the most experienced drivers, so it's not surprising that newly-minted teenage drivers -- who often have trouble controlling their impulses -- are susceptible to driving while distracted.

According to AAA, the most common distractions among teenage drivers are using electronic devices (for both talking and texting), adjusting controls in the car, and eating or drinking.

Teens Don't Believe Distracted Driving Is a Problem

Despite the research that shows that teenage drivers engage in distracted driving, they believe they are immune to getting into accidents related to their distractions.

"People often believe they drive safely and responsibly, especially our newest drivers," said Angela Patterson of Bridgestone Americas in a statement. "However, we need to reinforce that it only takes one time -- one sip of coffee, one change of the radio station, one glimpse at the cell phone -- to cause or be involved in a crash that could have dire consequences."

In order to collect teenage drivers' views about distracted driving, Bridgestone surveyed over 2,000 drivers aged 15 to 21. The study, which was recently released in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation, found that:

- Although 83 percent of respondents agree that texting while driving is "very dangerous," 27 percent of females and 11 percent of males admit to sending texts while driving. In addition, 38 percent of the female drivers and 17 percent of the male drivers read texts while driving.

- 18 percent of the teens surveyed say that they engage in distracted driving because everyone else does it.

- One-quarter of the teens do not think talking on the phone while driving is dangerous.

- Many teenagers don't think that taking one hand off the steering wheel to eat, drink or change the radio station counts as a distraction.

In addition, researchers found that many teens believe they are good drivers because they haven't been pulled over and haven't gotten into accidents yet. Also, two-thirds of the young drivers say that they believe they are "very safe" drivers.

But statistics don't support this assertion. Although teens tend to believe that they're invincible, research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, shows that motor-vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens aged 13 to 19. In 2009 alone, almost 3,500 teens were killed in car accidents.

Reckless and Wrong Way Driving Could Become Felonies in New York

A law that would make reckless driving and wrong-way driving a felony offense recently passed the New York Senate and is waiting for approval with the state Assembly.

ALBANY, NY, May 24, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Be careful making a right hand turn on a one-way street in New York, because if new legislation is passed, you could end up in jail for a long time. New York drivers take note, if you drive recklessly enough, you may lose your right to vote--indeed, you may become a felon.

A few months ago, the New York State Senate passed legislation that makes wrong-way driving and other reckless driving a felony offense.

A felony is a very serious offense; most states, including New York, require imprisonment for over a year for a felony. And once you have a felony conviction on your record, it can be challenging to pass background checks for new employment or rental housing. One's livelihood should not be put on the line all because of a traffic violation conviction.

The proposed law also dramatically changes the punishment requirements for reckless driving. Previously, reckless driving was only a class A misdemeanor, with a maximum prison sentence of up to 30 days. Under the new legislation being convicted for reckless driving could result in up to four years in prison.

In New York reckless driving includes drivers who, knowingly or due to intoxication, drive against the flow of traffic. Other ways to be charged with reckless driving are to exceed the speed limit by more than 30 miles an hour while under the influence of alcohol or while racing.

As of April 2012, the proposed bill remained with the state Assembly.

Combining forces on EVs

Initial $150,000 Can Lead to Larger Award

NEW CASTLE, Pa., May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Axion Power International Inc (OTC Bulletin Board: AXPW), the developer of advanced lead-carbon PbC® batteries and energy storage systems, announced today that it has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to fund a commercialization plan for the use of its PbC batteries in a "low-cost, high-efficiency" dual battery architecture for micro-hybrid vehicles.

Micro-hybrid vehicles, which are well on their way to becoming the most common type of automotive vehicle (estimated market size is 25 million by 2016), currently utilize a "start-stop" system which automatically turns off the engine when the vehicle comes to rest, and then automatically restarts the engine when the brake is disengaged. Next generation micro-hybrid vehicles will, and in some cases already do, include added features such as regenerative braking, "sailing" (i.e. turning the engine off as the vehicle slows or coasts below a pre-determined speed) and perhaps some form of battery assist to the initial vehicle acceleration. The lead-acid battery [LAB] is not designed to suitably provide the dual function required in today's micro-hybrid vehicles, let alone handle the added loads of future micro-hybrid vehicles. The dual feature includes working with the alternator generator to start and power the vehicle while the engine is on (LAB is good at this), and then separately, powering the vehicle's ancillary load when the engine is off (LAB is very poor at this). The LAB's shortcomings with respect to powering the ancillary load are directly attributable to the battery's rapid decline in charge acceptance over time due to sulfation. This occurs in the LAB after just a few months of usage. The PbC battery, on the other hand, has been proven to quickly accept full system charge (i.e. no loss of charge acceptance) for more than 5 years of usage. This advantage translates into much greater "engine off" time resulting in much greater fuel economy with significantly reduced Co2 emissions. Both of these features are important goals of automotive OEM's and of political leaders in the countries where they manufacture vehicles.

As more and more demands are placed on batteries for hybrid vehicles (such as those enumerated above), demands that require a significant amount of partial state of charge operation by the battery, a dual battery approach seems to offer the most efficient solution. Since the lead acid battery fails to be an adequate solution where charge acceptance/fast rate of re-charge is required, LAB's are not the answer to the dual battery approach. What Axion feels is the answer, and what the above award is designed to demonstrate, is that the PbC battery and PbC technology, will provide a cost effective solution to at least part, if not all, of the dual battery proposition.

This grant, from the DOE Small Business Innovation Research program was for the maximum allocation under Phase I, but it is the first step in the DOE grant approval process that could lead to significantly larger awards in future Phases of the program, said Axion Power CEO Thomas Granville. The award of the grant for Phase I enables Axion to apply for Phase II awards, which will be much larger ($1M or more). Successful completion of Phase II automatically qualifies an awardee to apply for additional DOE funding beyond the SBIR program. The Phase III funding provisions do not contain predetermined award limits.

According to DOE documents, Phase II awards will be granted to approximately 50% of Phase I awardees and will conclude in 12-15 months. Phase III will follow shortly thereafter.

"The overrepresentation of seniors in fatal crashes is mainly due to their frailty -- the age-related increase in the probability of dying as a result of a crash," said Ezra Hauer of the University of Toronto in a statement. "Frailty as a cause of overrepresentation should not be confused with the ability to drive safely. More than four-fifths of those killed when the driver is 85 years or older are the drivers themselves; among drivers between the ages of 16 and 59 years, two-thirds of those killed are other people. Unlike younger drivers, older drivers are a danger mainly to themselves."

Seniors and Safety on the Road

Aware of their limitations as they age, many seniors change their behaviors in order to stay safe. A motorcycle safety warning has recently been issued for Minnesota riders.

May 23, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Spring's early arrival in the Twin Cities caused many motorcycle enthusiasts to tune up their bikes and hit the road early this year. Unfortunately, this enthusiasm resulted in the death of a Lake Elmo motorcyclist. This accident prompted the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) to issue a motorcycle accident safety warning on March 16th.

DPS Motorcycle Safety Warning

The DPS warning is aimed at both motorists and bikers. It encourages drivers to be alert to the presence of motorcyclists around them and to double-check blind spots when changing lanes or making a turn.

The safety warning concludes by reminding the public that motorcycle registrations are at a record high. 230,000 bikes are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles and 404,000 bikers are currently licensed by the state. New Program Increases New York Bus Safety Inspections

In order to keep commercial bus passengers safe, the state recently approved funding that will increase Department of Transportation bus inspections.

A few months later, 30 bus passengers were injured in upstate New York in an accident that killed a truck driver. According to Governor Andrew Cuomo, these New York bus accidents are just two examples of why it's necessary to increase the amount of commercial bus inspections conducted by the Department of Transportation. To that end, Cuomo and the New York State Legislature recently approved $1 million in the state budget to create a program that will allow the DOT to conduct more safety bus inspections.

"This increased enforcement and manpower will enhance the states' ability to crack down on bus companies that may be putting passengers at risk," Cuomo said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Under the new program, buses -- including commercial bus lines and school buses -- will be inspected several times each year. And the more safety problems that the DOT finds with a particular bus company, the more inspections that company will undergo. In addition, the program will increase the number of unannounced inspections that the Department of Transportation can conduct.

Bus Safety: There's an App for That

In order to keep the public informed about which commercial bus companies are maintaining safety standards, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently launched an application for iPads and iPhones that includes the safety record of bus companies. The Compliance, Safety, Accountability program, known as CSA, was instituted by federal regulators for better enforcement of large truck and bus safety rules.

May 23, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Federal truck-safety regulators released a new, improved program in December 2010 that changes the way the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the part of the U.S. Department of Transportation responsible for heavy-truck and large bus safety, enforces compliance with federal road-safety rules and regulations. The agency's priority is to reduce the rate of commercial-truck crashes and related injuries and deaths.

The FMCSA noticed the decreasing rate of truck accidents was dropping at a slower pace and undertook a comprehensive overview of how it could better impact that rate through its monitoring and intervention of specific trucking companies and truckers. The result of the analysis is the new Compliance, Safety, Accountability program, known as CSA.

CSA allows the FMCSA in coordination with comparable state agencies to review safety practices of a higher number of truckers and intervene earlier to head off unsafe behaviors. Subject to CSA are trucking carriers with vehicles more than 10,000 pounds that engage in interstate driving as well as haulers of hazardous loads, even within any one state.

The agency emphasizes that it did not change its safety rules and regulations with CSA, only the intensity and clarity with which it decides how to intervene and enforce those regulations.

Safety Measurement System

The "centerpiece of CSA" is its Safety Measurement System, referred to as the SMS. This online, public database helps the FMCSA analyze and identify safety issues associated with particular trucking fleets. SMS looks at past safety violations, inspection results and accident data to project the risk of future collisions. To do this, the program utilizes seven safety-related categories named "the BASICs":

-Unsafe driving

-Fatigued driving (related to hours of service)

-Driver fitness

-Controlled substances and alcohol

-Vehicle maintenance

-Cargo

-Crash indicator

Within some of these categories, 12 so-called "red flag" driver violations are identified as particularly serious and require correction. These include:

-Driving with multiple licenses, without a valid commercial license or without the correct type of license for the type of vehicle operated

-Driving after disqualification

-Driving in possession of or after using drugs

-Driving in possession or under the influence of alcohol, or after using it within the previous four hours

-Driving without proper qualification

Federal and state regulators and law enforcement look at a company's violations in each of these seven buckets to help determine "patterns of high-risk behaviors" and provide appropriate guidance and support to reduce the risk of accidents for that fleet. Some of the interventions used include:

-Early warning letters

-Roadside inspections

-Targeted compliance reviews

-Onsite or offsite investigations

FMCSA says that if, with its support and guidance, carriers still do not take steps to correct safety deficiencies, it will not hesitate to impose "strong civil penalties." This could include the issuance of an "operations out-of-service order" or OOS that orders a trucking fleet to pull completely off the road.

Effects of Public Safety Data

The transparency CSA brings to individual trucking fleets and truckers through the SMS has caused companies to implement more stringent hiring practices in order to raise the overall quality of operators and ultimately improve company safety records. Private software companies have stepped up with new offerings of computerized programs that aid in driver data capture, on boarding of new employees and ongoing safety compliance.

The knowledge that insurance companies and shippers have access to safety data puts additional pressure on truckers to improve their safety pictures.

How Traumatic Brain Injuries Affect Children

Although children are known for their ability to bounce back from injuries, new research indicates that bouncing back from TBI is not easy, and children who suffer from these injuries often feel the effects for years.

May 23, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Traumatic brain injury -- often called TBI -- is brain damage that can be caused by a blow or jolt to the head, as well as by an object penetrating the skull. Oftentimes, TBIs are not life threatening and those who suffer from mild injuries experience temporary brain-cell dysfunction -- which results in symptoms such as headaches, sleep-pattern changes, mood alterations and loss of consciousness that lasts for a few seconds to a few minutes.

In other cases, TBIs can be quite severe, causing serious damage or even death to the victims.

The Causes and Effects of Severe TBIs

Traumatic brain injuries commonly occur while playing sports or from falls, car accidents and violent acts. When patients sustain severe TBI, they can suffer from:

-Slurred speech

-Loss of bowel or bladder control

Children and Severe Traumatic Brain Injuries

Although children are known for their ability to bounce back from injuries, research recently published in Pediatrics indicates that recovering from TBI is not easy even for kids. Children who suffer from these injuries often feel the effects for years.

In one study, researchers looked at 40 children from ages two to seven, who suffered from TBIs. The researchers examined these patients 12 months, 30 months and 10 years after their injuries and found that those with severe TBIs had the worst cognitive functioning -- although, with interventions and therapies, these children were able to develop in an age-appropriate way.

In another study, researchers looked at 53 children who suffered from TBI before they were three years old. When the patients were examined again between the ages of four and six, the researchers found that those with more severe brain injuries scored about seven to ten points lower on IQ tests.

Although researchers cannot say for sure what factors affect recovery from severe TBI, the studies indicate that a child's environment may play a role.

"Children from cohesive family environments and children whose parents had lower levels of stress showed better recovery," researcher Louise Crowe said in a statement. "Why this is so is unclear, but it may be due to a parent spending more time with their children, and children also growing up in a less stressful environment."

New Commercial Driving License Requirements Will Keep Louisiana Roads Safe

New commerical driver licensing requirements will help to keep all motorists safe.

May 23, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Recent changes to the commercial driver licensing (CDL) requirements issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will better prepare commercial drivers and help keep roads safe for everyone.

In 2011, the FMCSA adopted a new commercial learner's permit regulation and toughened requirements for earning a CDL. It also changed the definition of "tank vehicle," which affected the endorsements on some individuals' CDLs. Even though the FMCSA gives states until July 8, 2014, to implement these changes, Louisiana started citing drivers for violations of the new rules and related truck driver negligence this past February and started implementing penalties for those citations in March.

The new commercial learner's permit, or CLP, will be required for all CDL applicants. Drivers must be at least 18 to obtain a CLP and CLPs must be active for at least 14 days before permit holders can apply for a full driver's license. A CLP holder can only be endorsed to carry restricted passengers, drive a school bus or operate a tank vehicle. CLP applicants will also experience tougher background checks and documentation requirements. Applicants for CLPs must meet the same requirements as applicants for CDLs, including a knowledge test administered by state using FMCSA-approved material.

Changes to the "tank vehicle" definition may have implications for current CDL holders. Now, the FMCSA defines a tank vehicle as a vehicle which transports liquid or gaseous materials in a tank that is permanently or temporarily fixed to the truck's chassis. The tank on a tank vehicle is rated for 119 gallons or more and aggregated to 1,000 gallons or more. Flatbed trucks carrying empty tanks that can carry 1,000 or more gallons are not considered tank vehicles. However, a flatbed truck carrying intermediate bulk containers containing material would be considered a tank vehicle because their containers are temporarily attached.

In 2003, a study by the National Center for Statistics and Analysis ranked Louisiana sixth in the nation for its rate of trucking accidents involving large commercial vehicles. The state had 1.9 accidents involving large trucks per 1000 miles of road. Nationally, in 2006, there were nearly 5,000 fatalities and 106,000 injuries involving large trucks. Tougher CDL and CLP requirements should help commercial drivers be better prepared for their work on the nation's roadways. Increasing trucker safety helps increase road safety for all users.
