Data Scientist

Are you a resourceful and independent data-lover?

Newsmatics, a News Tech company headquartered in Washington, D.C., is seeking a full-time or part-time data scientist interested in news and media research!

Newsmatics activities cover media monitoring, investigating media bias and ownership, and collecting news articles massively. We are growing a massive News Index. The index will allow us to help readers consume news content wisely, which we are testing with our prototype tool, Perspectify.

Role highlights:

  • Fetch data from relational databases (AWS Aurora), time series databases (InfluxDB), use search engine (Manticore)
  • Data analysis – using NLP techniques, modeling, or training ML models to solve various news-related problems or BI tasks
  • Crafting user-friendly data exploration tools, visualizations, reports, or dashboards

Research directions include:

  • Political bias detection – designing, training, or improving on AI models analyzing bias
  • News diffusion (how news or ideas spread) across different media sources
  • Business predictions based on news
  • Designing data exploration tools, interactive visualizations, and dashboards
  • Developing smarter, personalized search systems
  • Studying social trends

Qualifications:

  • Experience in data science with a professional portfolio including both work-related and personal projects
  • Commitment to data-driven method with a meticulous eye to detail, producing high-quality, accurate, and unbiased findings
  • Technical proficiency in fetching data from various sources (relational databases, time series databases, APIs)
  • Proficiency in data analysis and NLP methods, some experience with LLM use or development of ML models
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Matplotlib, Tableau, Power BI)
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex findings in an understandable and accessible manner
