The attorneys at the Law Offices of Alcock and Associates announce the results from their recent medical mission to Nicaragua. The Phoenix lawyers covered the expenses for two doctors and six assistants to travel to Jinotega, Nicaragua. There, they performed over 50 surgeries on needy children and adults.
Dr. Nicholas Retson, who is a board certified plastic surgeon, lead the team. Attorney2 Nicholas Alcock, the owner of Alcock and Associates, accompanied the group and acted as a Spanish interpreter, photographer and delivery man. The team was in Nicaragua for eight days.
The patients were treated for tumors, burns and other disfiguring conditions. Special efforts were made, however, to identify children with cleft palates and cleft lips. This genetic condition is extremely difficult on children and their parents. Many children are ostracized due to their appearance. Says attorney Alcock, "It was amazing to see the complete transformation of these children. It was also an honor to work with incredible doctors and health care providers."
Jinotega is known as the hidden city. With a population of 30,000 residents, it is tucked away in the mountains north of Managua. During the period of conquistadores, indigenous people hid in the valley for over a century. The city remains largely unnoticed. As a result, there is an enormous need for modern medical treatment.
The law offices of Alcock and Associates worked in cooperation with the charity Esperanca. For decades, Esperanca has provided the logistical support to make these medical missions happen. The team worked 14 hour days, getting the patients transportation, clothing, shelter and food.
Attorney Alcock notes, "I had an opportunity to see firsthand how these poor children live. Most sleep in leaky plastic structures. There is no running water or electricity. If ever a population needed help, these kids deserve it. We look forward to returning next year so that we can keep making things better."
The lawyers at Alcock and Associates will fund another medical mission in February, 2013.
