Fast Market Research recommends "Bahrain Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q3 2010" from Business Monitor International, now available
A population of just 738,000 limits the overall pharmaceutical market in Bahrain. In 2009 Bahrain's pharmaceutical market was worth just BHD43mn (US$112mn) but this is expected to reach BHD54mn (US$142mn) in 2014. However, BMI expects health spending in Bahrain to increase at a far faster rate, expanding from BHD206mn (US$541mn) in 2009 to BHD486mn (US$1.28bn) by 2014, representing a US dollar compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.8%. An expanding population, increased consumption and the growing cost of medical imports will help drive the growth. The latter is especially significant as Bahrain has a very limited manufacturing capacity and imports almost all of its pharmaceutical products, a practice eased by various free trade agreements.
However, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) announced that it had suspended free trade talks with the European Union as the two were unable to converge on several key points. The negotiations have been postponed indefinitely because of disagreements on subsidies in the petrochemicals sector as well as foreign equity stakes. The announcement by the GCC is more likely a sign of posturing rather than abandonment, although there is little indication of when negotiations may resume. There is much scepticism on the plausibility of a similar deal on an India-GCC FTA, which has been conspicuously silent. An India-GCC agreement may go the way of the EU-GCC FTA negotiations for similar reasons. Conversely, the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Pakistan's Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry in March 2010 to boost trade between the countries, which could include significant room for pharmaceutical trade. In any case, pharmaceutical imports will continue to rise from US$77.4mn in 2009 to US$111.5mn by 2014, representing a CAGR of 7.6% in US dollar terms.
Healthcare developments in Bahrain in recent months saw the BHD3.4mn (US$9mn) Nuwaidrat health centre open in north-east Bahrain, in addition to four additional centres to be constructed in the near-term. Saudi Arabia will be spending SAR1bn (US$266.16mn) on a medical city in Bahrain affiliated with the Arabian Gulf University. Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti government has committed a considerably smaller sum of BHD2mn (US$5.28mn) for a healthcare facility in Barbar due to be completed by the end of 2011.
Such investments have helped Bahrain generate some impressive health indicators. Bahrain recently became the first Arab country to have its primary healthcare facilities recognised as world-class by an international accreditation body. The quality of Bahrain's healthcare sector corroborated by Accreditation Canada, which certified the Salmaniya Medical Complex, a psychiatric hospital and 22 primary healthcare centres in the country. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) selected Bahrain as a model country in its monitoring and implementation of international health regulations. Bahrain was also rated the best country in the Middle East for maternal healthcare, as well as the socio-economic and political status of women by Save the Children in 2010.
