Barry Sullivan: First Cooney & Conway Chair in Advocacy
Sullivan is highly regarded for his extensive experience practicing law, and for long sharing his knowledge and expertise in academia. The attorney, who has spent 25 years overall as a partner at Jenner & Block LLP, spoke candidly to the press about the appointment and his career.
"I feel like I've had a really interesting career," he told the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. . . .I've always liked teaching and scholarship and also practicing law.…I was inspired to think you could do good things as a lawyer."
Sullivan also discussed the role model who influenced his decision to become an attorney: "I had an uncle who was a lawyer. He came out of Harvard during the Depression. And he retired as a deputy chief of detectives."
In his Loyola induction speech, "The Humanity of Advocacy," Sullivan told a large audience, "Advocates who appear to exaggerate or prevaricate will not be believed. If they substitute such things for the hard work of thinking about how to persuade those who are to judge their case, they also risk losing sight of the realities of their case, to the detriment of their clients and their own self-interest. . . . Their clients' cause—and their own reputations—may suffer in either case."
