What if BP's Offshore Oil Disaster Occurred in the Arctic? Groups Fight Alaska Leases

May 17, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ -- Shell Oil won a legal victory in a federal court last week when suits were rejected to stop oil and gas drilling off the Arctic coast of Alaska.

Alaska native groups and environmentalists are trying to halt more than $2 billion in leases that the federal government has issued to Shell. Shell is planning to begin exploratory drilling this summer on leases as far as 140 miles offshore in the Chukchi Sea, an arm of the Pacific between the US and Russia that's home to one of America's two polar bear populations.
