US Opens Self Up to Human Rights Scrutiny

March 18, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Will the US be found guilty of human rights violations? For the first time, the US will submit itself to a "universal periodic review" by the UN Human Rights Council.

"Human rights are universal, but their experience is local. This is why we are committed to holding everyone to the same standard, including ourselves," said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Every UN member nation is supposed to be reviewed once every four years, but some observers are afraid the whole process will be politicized by human rights abusers, such as Iran and Myanmar, in order to justify their abuses.
