Brazil May Allow Breaking of US Film, Drug, Music Patents
March 16, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ In retribution for actions by the US, Brazil is considering looking the other way in protecting US patents and intellectual property on a number of products, including music, movies, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
The World Trade Organization has given Brazil its support for action against the US in retaliation for the US failing to rid itself of illegal subsidies to cotton farmers. The WTO has authorized Brazil to impose up to $829 million in sanctions.
This case is one of the few instances where the WTO has allowed a wronged party to retaliate against a sector not involved in the initial dispute. Brazil may become the first country to ever apply cross-retaliation if the country and the US cannot negotiate a settlement.
