Wind Energy Stimulus Money Not Creating US Jobs; Most of $2 Billion Going Overseas
February 10, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Despite a nearly $2 billion stimulus investment in wind energy by the US government, the stimulus money for wind energy has created only a handful of new jobs in the US. Instead, a majority of the stimulus money has gone overseas to wind turbine manufacturers, according to a report from the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University.
The report says that 80% of the stimulus money has created about 6,000 jobs, but only "a couple hundred" have been created in the US. In fact, the American Wind Energy Association states that the US experienced an overall drop in wind manufacturing jobs last year.
Spanish renewable energy company Iberdrola received the most stimulus money, netting $577 million, according to the report. One reason so much money is going overseas is the limited wind power manufacturing infrastructure in the US as only two major American manufacturers -- General Electric Energy and Clipper Wind -- make wind turbines.
