Statement of the American Lung Association

Washington, D.C. (January 24, 2012) —

The American Lung Association is looking forward to President Obama’s comments on protecting public health and updating clean air standards during this evening’s State of the Union Address. The Lung Association commends the Obama Administration for its recent actions to protect the public from power plant pollution such as mercury, arsenic and other toxics, and to reduce the health threats associated with cross-state air pollution or “second-hand smog.”
The American Lung Association has begun running print advertisements to publicly thank President Obama for fulfilling the promise of the Clean Air Act to clean up toxic power plant pollution.
Immediately following President Obama’s annual address to the nation, the White House will be hosting a live panel discussion among senior administration officials and on social media to answer questions from the American public. The Lung Association will be on hand for the evening and has asked its supporters to submit questions regarding the administration’s approach to protecting public health and the importance of air that is safe and healthy to breathe.
This year, the Lung Association will work with President Obama and those in Congress who are defending the Clean Air Act to make sure the Environmental Protection Agency enforces the law to protect the public health.
