MILFORD, CONN., UNITED STATES, November 7, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- MILFORD, CT – Strong prices were reported at Shannon’s 20th anniversary fall art auction held October 26th. Nearly 300 lots went under the hammer, grossing over $2.3 million, with 72 percent of lots sold. Shannon’s set a world record high price for at least three artists in the sale, achieving an impressive $162,500 for Richard Hayley Lever’s The Old Lighthouse and Fleets of St. Ives.

Six works by the American realist Henry Martin Gasser were offered, all achieving notable prices. Winter Corner, a city scene by Gasser, sold for $32,500, setting a world record price for a work on paper by the artist. A large oil painting, titled Industrial Scene, sold for $22,500, while Winter Harbor Scene, a watercolor on paper, soared past the high estimate to sell for $13,750.

Shannon’s continued their trend of achieving strong prices for Dale Nichols, following their record-setting price of $120,000 in May 2017. The two lots in the October auction soared past their low estimates: Through the Clouds went for $100,000 and Silent Morning brought $35,000.

In American genre painting, a new world record was set for William Tolman Carlton, whose The Yankee Peddler more than doubled its high estimate to finish at $75,000. The painting was documented in two exhibitions at the New England Art Union in Boston in 1851. This rediscovered masterpiece sheds new light on Carlton’s career and on the history of American genre painting. Shannon’s held the previous world record for the artist at $47,800 in 2005, for the work titled Cider Making.

The top-selling lot in the sale, a scene of Bathers, by William Glackens, sold for $187,500 to a private collector. Other notable highlights included In the Garden by Abbott Fuller Graves ($112,500); an early winter scene by A.T. Bricher ($62,500); Bricher’s Low Tide, Grand Manan ($35,000); another Bricher, titled Summer Pond, Southampton ($25,000); an allegorical marble Bust of Eve by Thomas Ball ($37,500); a beautiful portrait titled Indolence by European artist Guillaume Seignac ($42,500); and a large painting by Eric Sloane, titled Sunrise on the Farm ($30,000).
