Proposed Legislation Jeopardizes Public Health Safety Net

Reauthorization of Health Care Programs Comes at the Expense of the Prevention and Public Health Fund According to NACCHO

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, October 4, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), representing nearly 3,000 local health departments, opposes the draft “CHAMPION Act” being marked up in the House Energy and Commerce Committee as it deeply cuts funding of the Prevention and Public Health Fund (PPHF), a critical lifeline for maintaining the health and safety of everyone in the community.

“Our members wholeheartedly support the programs being extended in the legislation including the Community Health Centers and the National Health Service Corps,” said NACCHO Interim Executive Director and Chief of Government Affairs Laura Hanen, MPP. “However, the House plan to support these programs at the expense of the Prevention and Public Health Fund is unwise. We welcome the opportunity to work with the House Energy and Commerce Committee to find a funding solution that does not risk the public’s health.”

The Prevention and Public Health Fund makes up 12% of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) funding. Among the CDC programs at risk are the 317 Immunization Program, Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, and Diabetes Prevention.
