New Centre for monitoring and diagnostics of automation systems created at Gazprom Neft’s Moscow Refinery

A new Centre for monitoring and diagnostics of automation systems (CMD) has been put into operation at Gazprom Neft’s Moscow Refinery. Thanks to a cutting-edge software and hardware complex, the new centre monitors the status and operation of all elements of the plant’s control systems, round the clock. The information collected allows issues that could lead to equipment malfunction to be identified and predicted at an early stage, and any irregularities avoided.

The creation of the centre marks the next stage in the automation of Gazprom Neft’s refining and sales processes, the first such monitoring and diagnostic centre having been opened at the company’s Omsk refinery in 2015. Gazprom Neft’s project has no equivalent in Russia, and is a unique and integrated solution delivering round-the-clock uninterrupted monitoring and diagnostics of the status of process equipment, throughout the company’s refining assets.

Monitoring operates at all levels of automation throughout the Moscow Refinery, with both field instrument loops and software management and control systems, as well as instruments facilitating the virtual analysis of sophisticated oil refining process management systems, all connected to the centre. Continuous remote monitoring allows non-optimal equipment operation to be detected and fixed. In addition to this, continuous 24-hour monitoring creates the opportunity for maintenance schedules of technological facilities to be put in place based on their actual condition, as well as helping to reduce the number and duration of regular technical inspections.

Management systems at the Moscow Refinery’s key secondary refining facilities have already been connected with the centre as part of the first stage of its coming into operation. Data from the Moscow Refinery is accessible to employees at the company’s Downstream Efficiency Control Centre, located in St Petersburg, in real time. The Moscow Refinery’s CMD controls the operations of 25 automated process control centres and more than 1,200 monitoring and metering instruments. All of the Moscow Refineries technological facilities will be connected to the centre by the end of 2018.

Anatoly Cherner, Deputy CEO for Logistics Refining and Sales, Gazprom Neft, commented: “This new centre is part of Gazprom Neft’s global project to create a single and inclusive technological platform for managing efficiency in refining and marketing. We are consistently implementing a comprehensive refining automation programme directed at implementing and developing high-technology solutions that will increase the efficiency and operational reliability of Gazprom Neft’s refineries, as well as raising the level of workplace safety at our processing assets”.
