“First People, New Voices” comes to the Grand Performances stage.

Scintillating series kicks off on Saturday, July 1, 2017.

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, June 26, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Los Angeles, California----June 2017------Experience Hip Hop from a whole new perspective this summer as Grand Performances provides a unique experience taking you back to Hip Hop’s indigenous roots.

As part of our 2017 season, Grand Performances will present “First Peoples, New Voices,” a series featuring artists from various North American Indigenous communities who use contemporary music, dance, and theater to share their stories and experiences. The series will include a hip hop artist residency and unexpected artist pairings highlighting diverse voices, including women and Two Spirit/LGBTQ members of the Native community.

The first performance “First Peoples, New Voices” series will take place on Saturday, July 1, 2017 and feature indigenous Hip Hop. The Dream Warrior Collective is comprised of talented and innovative Indigenous cultural artists, dancers, poets, speakers, and educators who
embody Indigenous values and work to educate and provide for their communities. This event will feature artists including hip hop artist Frank Waln (Sicangu Lakota), spoken word poet Tanaya Winder (Southern Ute/Duckwater Shoshone/Pyramid Lake Paiute), and world-renowned dancers The Sampson Brothers (Mvskoke Creek/Seneca) . The performance will include a collaborative performance with the contemporary poet Mare Advertencia Lirika (Zapotec) from Oaxaca, Mexico and LA-based MC RedCloud. There will be interactive, educational programs with children and community members the week prior to the performance.

This two-week series will feature artists from North American indigenous communities such as the Zapotecas and the Chumash, bringing not only a rare cultural experience but also showcasing various sounds and movements in accordance to the different tribes. Displaying their community traditions, these artists will bring their rapid poetry and profound lyrics to life this July.
