Tchefuncte Animal Hospital Shares 4th of July Pet Fireworks Safety Tips

MADISONVILLE, La., June 25, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The 4th of July is a celebratory time for Americans. However, pet owners should be aware of the additional risks and hazards posed by this summer holiday. The entire staff at Tchefuncte Animal Hospital is committed to the health and safety of area pets.

Because of this, the Madisonville veterinary staff is recommending that all pets be microchipped ahead of the 4th of July holiday. The main reason for this is the risk that firework noise can pose. Most animals react with fright or agitation to loud noises, and the explosions of fireworks can be particularly fear-inducing.

If a dog or cat hears fireworks while outdoors, this could cause them to run away and become lost. If they have a microchip, their odds of being returned to the owner are much higher.

Outfitting pets with a standard collar and tag also helps; however, there's always the risk that the collar could fall off. In addition to microchipping, owners should also keep a current, clear photo of each pet in case a pet becomes lost and they need to alert the neighborhood to keep an eye out for the missing pet.

However, if your pet is easily frightened by the noises and lights of fireworks, call Tchefuncte Animal Hospital or your local veterinarian as they can give tips on how to handle this and can also recommend anti-anxiety methods and treatments to help your pets cope.

Pets should be kept well hydrated during 4th of July celebrations in order to help them avoid heatstroke. Providing them with a small wading pool can also help with keeping their body temperature regulated.

Sunscreen and insect repellent could also pose a risk to pets during the summer season. Pet owners should only use formulations that are made for pets to ensure their safety.

Another pet risk during a 4th of July celebration is possible poisoning from foods being offered at a picnic or BBQ. Foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, candy, nuts, dairy, fatty foods, alcoholic drinks, and processed foods should never be given to pets.

David Moores, DVM of Tchefuncte Animal Hospital says, “The 4th of July is a festive time for outdoor celebrations, but pet owners should be aware of the possible dangers for pets. Firework noise can cause distress and trigger pets into running away and becoming lost. Please keep your pets indoors and consider therapies for those who are easily frightened.”
