Alexey Miller and Giorgos Tsipras note upward trend in Russian gas exports to Greece

A working meeting between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Management Committee of Gazprom, and Giorgos Tsipras, Secretary General for International Economic Relations at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, took place today at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2017.

The meeting participants discussed natural gas deliveries to Greece. It was noted that Gazprom’s gas exports to the Hellenic Republic had totaled 2.7 billion cubic meters in 2016, showing a 35 per cent increase compared to 2015. This upward trend continues. Specifically, in May 2017 Greece’s imports of Russian gas grew by 49 per cent against the same month of 2016.

The meeting also focused on the efforts for greater energy cooperation, including the establishment of a southern route for Russian gas supplies to Europe across Greece, taking into account the start of construction of the TurkStream gas pipeline.

Background

On February 24, 2016, Gazprom, Edison SpA, and DEPA SA signed the Memorandum of Understanding on natural gas deliveries from Russia across the Black Sea and third countries to Greece and from Greece to Italy in order to set up a southern route for Russian gas supplies to Europe.
