EFSA-Member State risk communication handbook updated

The third edition of the joint EFSA-Member State publication “When Food is Cooking up a Storm: Proven Recipes for Risk Communications” is out. The updated edition includes new case studies on caffeine and acrylamide in food, a new overview on communicating uncertainty in science and an updated chapter on using social media.

The guidelines provide a framework to assist decision-making about appropriate communications approaches in a wide variety of situations that can occur when assessing and communicating risks related to food safety in Europe. Communicators from EFSA, Member States and the European Commission work together in EFSA’s Communications Expert Network. A key aim of the group is to promote cooperation and coherence in risk communications, particularly between risk assessors in Member States and EFSA – a key priority in EFSA’s Strategy 2020.
