Statement by Acura Regarding 9-speed Automatic Transmission Sensor Cluster Recall: 2015 TLX V6

  • Approximately 8,300 model-year 2015 Acura TLX V6 vehicles are affected in the U.S.
  • 9-speed automatic transmission control software will be updated, free of charge

TORRANCE, Calif. – In September 2016, Acura formally notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of its intention to recall approximately 8,300 model-year 2015 TLX V6 vehicles in the United States to update the 9-speed automatic transmission control software, free of charge. While there was some delay in reaching agreement with NHTSA on the final language in Acura’s recall filing, Acura notified owners of affected vehicles within sixty days and began recall repairs shortly thereafter. At the time of this announcement, approximately 75% of the affected vehicles have received the recall repair.

Prior to Acura’s formal defect notification, the automatic transmission supplier, ZF, filed a Defect Information Report (DIR) regarding certain of its transmissions installed in multiple automakers vehicles, including early production of the 2015 Acura TLX V6. According to ZF’s DIR, insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness may lead the transmission control unit to misinterpret certain electrical signals and unexpectedly engage a “failsafe” mode, shifting the transmission into the neutral position, which would cause a loss of motive power and could increase the risk of a crash.

No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue in Acura vehicles.

Acura anticipates that only a very small number of Acura vehicles may actually be affected by this issue, but will provide a software update for all included vehicles out of an abundance of caution. The software update to the transmission control unit will allow a warning light to illuminate if this condition is detected and will significantly extend the period before the transmission is placed into the “failsafe” mode, allowing an owner to seek repair at the nearest Acura dealer.

Acura is announcing this recall to encourage all owners of included, unrepaired vehicles to take them to an authorized dealer as soon as possible to seek repair. Mailed recall notifications were sent to registered owners of affected vehicles in the fall of 2016. In addition, owners of these vehicles can also determine if their vehicles require repair by going to recalls.acura.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.
