Bangladesh Sustainability Compact: Third Implementation Follow-up Meeting

Sustainable development Dhaka - Bangladesh, 18 May 2017

The third follow-up meeting of the Bangladesh sustainability compact will take place in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 18 May 2017. It will aim to evaluate progress with the implementation of the Compact – taking a close look at freedom of association and respect for collective bargaining – and look into the future prospects. It will bring together all Compact partners and offer a session for interested stakeholders.

In reaction to the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in April 2013, the Government of Bangladesh, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the European Union and the United States launched a joint initiative known as "Compact for Continuous Improvements in Labour Rights and Factory Safety in the Ready-Made Garment and Knitwear Industry in Bangladesh". At the last follow-up meeting in 2016, Canada joined as the fifth compact partner.

The European Commission has been engaging with its partners to address labour, health and safety issues in Bangladesh and to encourage responsible business conduct in the country's clothing industry. To monitor progress, two follow-up meetings were organised in October 2014 in Brussels and January 2016 in Dhaka. The Commission also released three technical reports, in July 2014 , April 2015 and July 2016.
