PIRELLI AND THE TWO-WHEEL CHALLENGES FOR THE 2017 MOTORSPORT SEASON

PIRELLI AND THE TWO-WHEEL CHALLENGES FOR THE 2017 MOTORSPORT SEASON

An innovative Superpole® tyre and new standard compounds for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship together with the new FIM Supersport 300 World Championship are the most important news regarding circuit racing; as for off-road competition there are new developments in the SCORPION™ MX range

In 2017 Pirelli will again also play a leading role in the most important two-wheel national and international competitions. The Milanese brand will take part in an impressive 119 motorcycling championships over 5 continents, in some cases in the role of Sole Tyre Supplier and in other cases within open tyre competitions. The Superbike, Motocross and Endurance World Championships as well as the British Superbike Championship are confirmed to be amongst the most important competitions together with a number of national and local championships, both on track and off-road. Pirelli has in many cases been operating for many years, keeping faith to the strong sporting DNA which has always been a distinguishing feature of the company.

There are several items of news concerning on track competition. This year the riders competing in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, where Pirelli has been Sole Tyre Supplier for all classes  since 2004, will rely on a new Superpole® tyre which will be available starting from Aragón, the first European round of the season.

As for 2016, the new Pirelli qualifier tyre will be available on Saturday for the Superpole® and only to the 12 riders who manage to qualify for the second Superpole® session, which will define the final positioning of the first 12 riders on the starting grid. Compared to the past seasons, when the qualifier tyre was only able to guarantee one single timed lap, the most important feature of the new Pirelli tyre is its ability to provide the riders with a minimum of 2 and up to a maximum of 4 timed laps, depending on track characteristics.

Moreover, given the popularity and the excellent performance registered on various circuits and in different racing situations in 2016, Pirelli has decided to promote several slick development solutions to new standard solutions for 2017. DIABLO™ Superbike will have new rear solutions and a new front standard SC1 compound, which will not only be available to riders competing in WSB and to all the riders taking part in national championships, but also be available to any racers in the world. It’s already well known, unlike other championships where prototype tyres are used, that from the beginning Pirelli’s philosophy has been that of designing, with the help of riders, competition products which can be used by every rider. That’s where the now-famous motto “We sell what we race, we race what we sell” stems from, together with the creation of the DIABLO™ range which includes some legendary tyres such as the DIABLO™ Superbike, used in the top class, and the DIABLO™ Supercorsa SC, used in the Supersport and Superstock 1000 categories. Starting from this year, these will also be available to the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship, the newborn racing class for small engine motorcycles, which are actually becoming the new entry level for the motorcycling enthusiast into the world of supersport bikes.

Pirelli’s commitment has been re-confirmed also in off-road competition, starting with the FIM Motocross World Championship, where the Italian tyre manufacturer will still be playing a key role boasting 66 World Titles, achieved with strictly standard products belonging to the SCORPION™ MX family, all fully available on the market. This year, this tyre family has been undergoing a slight restyling and repositioning process. As for the front tyre, the riders will have the chance to choose between SCORPION™ MX32™ in Mid Soft or Mid Hard compounds, whereas there will be 4 different compounds for the rear: in addition to SCORPION™ MX32™ in Mid Soft or Mid Hard compounds, SCORPION™ MX Soft and SCORPION™ MX Hard will also be available.

Lastly, Pirelli will be participating in several other competitions at a national level, in some cases as the Sole Tyre Supplier and in others within an open tyre regime. First of all, the MCE British Superbike Championship, which Pirelli has been supporting as Presenting Sponsor and Sole Tyre Supplier for all classes since 2008 and will be supporting until 2020. In addition to this, Pirelli has also confirmed its important position in the German National Championship, France Superbike FSBK (French National Championship), CIV (Italian Speed Championship), Superbike Series Brazil, in Malaysia and Philippines with the Superbike Series and in many other national championships.

As for the European championships which will envisage the presence of more than one tyre manufacturer, Pirelli will be equipping an average of 70% of the bikes lining on the starting grids, confirming the popularity of the Italian tyre brand among riders from all over the world.
