Gazprom’s Science and Technology Prize goes to Engineering solutions for UGS well productivity

The award ceremony for the 2016 edition of Gazprom’s Science and Technology Prize took place at the meeting of the Company’s Management Committee. It was noted that the total economic benefit of the award-winning innovations, including import-substituting ones, had exceeded RUB 14 billion.

The top prize went to the ‘Developing a set of engineering solutions aimed at enhancing well productivity in Gazprom’s UGS facilities’ project by Gazprom UGS. The economic benefit of those solutions, which were implemented in 2010–2015, totaled RUB 5.5 billion.

The second place was taken by the ‘Gazprom’s office automation system based on specialized software and hardware’ project by Gazprom Inform.

The author teams of the following projects also received the award:

  • ‘Single economic-mathematical model for generating gas flows and balances within Russia’s Unified Gas Supply System, with breakdown of the total gas flow by supply routes and assessment of Gazprom’s economic performance in mid-term planning’ by NIIgazeconomika;
  • ‘Improving energy efficiency and eco-friendliness of the GTK-25IR gas compressor unit based on domestic innovations’ by Gazprom Transgaz Yugorsk;
  • ‘Enhancing gas production and transmission reliability in the Bovanenkovo – Ukhta and Ukhta – Torzhok gas trunklines by planning and performing comprehensive repairs in engine drives of shipboard-type gas turbines’ by Gazprom Tsentrremont;
  • ‘Developing and introducing domestic plasma technologies and equipment for metal cutting and gouging, as well as insulation stripping, during gas trunkline overhauls’ by Gazprom Transgaz Tchaikovsky;
  • ‘Developing and introducing methods of boosting gas supplies to consumers via gas distribution stations above design capacity without investments into retrofitting’ by Gazprom Transgaz Moscow.

Background

Gazprom’s Science and Technology Prize was established in 1998. The Prize is an important component of the corporate scientific and technological policy aimed at promoting innovations in the Company’s businesses and maintaining its technological leadership within the global energy industry.

In 2016, Gazprom's subsidiaries submitted 18 projects for the Prize, with 146 authors engaged in the projects.

The papers were assessed by a group of experts from Gazprom and its subsidiaries. The assessment criteria included urgency, novelty, scientific and technological level (research intensity), area of application, scope and economic impact with regard to Gazprom, commercial potential and protectability, and use of domestic products, technologies and equipment.
