Gazprom Neft to hold fifth annual high-technology conference on the development of hard-to-recover reserves

Gazprom Neft is to hold a major technology conference on new approaches in developing hard-to-recover (‘tight’) reserves — one of the most pertinent issues currently in oil production engineering. More effective development of hard-to-recover reserves means not just that new fields — often with challenging geological conditions — can be brought into production, but that production can also be increased at brown fields.

The conference, now into its fifth year, and organised by the Gazprom Neft Joint Scientific and Research Centre, will take place on 24 — 25 November at the St Petersburg Mining University. Specialists from Gazprom Neft and other oil and oil service companies, as well as experts from higher education establishments serving Russia’s oil and gas sector, will discuss new methodologies and equipment in geological prospecting, development, drilling and the production of tight and unconventional reserves. Specialists from the Scientific and Research Centre will outline projects undertaken through the company’s Technology Strategy, directed at the development of hard-to-recover reserves and the development of the Bazhenov formation.

The Gazprom Neft Scientific and Research Centre

“Hard-to-recover” reserves include those in low-productivity strata, and those with high water content, as well as reserves in which oil is in contact with natural gas or water. The effective development of these demands cutting-edge — and expensive — methodologies. Since starting work in hard-to-recover reserves in 2011 Gazprom Neft has, through the application of new technologies and approaches, brought an additional 150 million tonnes of such reserves into development — a volume it plans to double by 2020. The effective development of hard-to-recover reserves has seen the company actively developing drilling technologies and hydraulic fracturing (fracking), in particular. Over the past three years the number of high-technology wells throughout Gazprom Neft fields has increased five-fold: today more than 50 percent of all new wells drilled in any one year are high-technology wells.

Gazprom Neft Technology Directorate Head and Director General of the Gazprom Neft Joint Scientific and Research Centre Mars Khasanov commented: “Hard-to-recover reserves comprise the greatest proportion of the Gazprom Neft resource base under development. Which is precisely why we pay such close attention to those technologies that allow us to bring new volumes of hard-to-recover reserves into development, and why we are constantly searching for ways to ways to develop these most effectively. We are very familiar with the particular features of our fields, and the implementation of innovative technologies will guarantee the resource base for our company — and that of the entire industry — for many years to come.”

To attend the conference please complete the registration form available on the Gazprom Neft Joint Scientific and Research Centre website (http://ntc.gazprom-neft.ru/) before November 2016.
