Let’s Get Local

By: Julie Schrei, Political Affairs Director, Food Marketing Institute

Get LocalIn 14 days, millions of Americans will head to the polls in the most historic election to date. But even with all the hype, many voters are not excited about the presidential candidates. So many in fact, that both parties are concerned you will stay home on Election Day and we will have the lowest voter turnout in modern history.

Even if you are still unsure about the top of the ticket, there are many important races happening at the local and state levels. Forty-two states are holding State Senate elections, 44 are holding State House elections, and 45 of the country’s largest cities are holding municipal elections this year. Consider this: city councils and county boards vote and approve roughly 15-20 ordinances each month.

This is why we are asking for your help in our “Let’s Get Local” campaign.

Our focus is to help educate voters about the impact they can have on state and local races and how the outcome affects their daily lives. From sales taxes to city parking restrictions, these rules have a direct impact on us and our communities. So much is at stake this election. Your voice can be heard on Election Day, but only if you vote.
