Oct. 26 Webinar to Explore Available Financing Mechanisms for Tribal Energy and Economic Development

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Indian Energy, in partnership with Western Area Power Administration, is hosting a free webinar entitled "Accessing Capital for Tribal Energy and Economic Development" on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time.

Attendees will learn about available financing mechanisms that can be used to make energy efficiency and renewable energy projects economically feasible, including: utility community solar models, third-party vendors, green bonds, energy savings performance contracts, and utility energy service contracts. These mechanisms can enable tribes to develop projects with limited to no up-front capital costs, minimizing the need to include project costs in budgets or request congressional appropriations.

Brian Lipscomb, President and CEO of Energy Keepers Inc., a tribal corporation established in 2012 to manage the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ acquisition of Se̓liš Ksanka Ql̓ispe̓ (Salish Kootenai Dam) in Montana, will present a case study on how the tribal hydropower project was financed. Paul Schwabe, Senior Finance Analyst at DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, will provide an overview of tribal energy project financing options. Joel Laubenstein, Principal for accounting and advisory firm Baker Tilly Virchow Krause LLP's Energy and Utilities team, will explore the use of new market tax credits to finance tribal energy projects, including examples from the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

The webinar will also feature information on tax credits and incentives available via the DOE-funded Database for State Incentives for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

There is no charge to attend the webinar, but registration is required. Register for this webinar.
