Tonbridge-based Taywell Ice Creams scooped the award for 'Innovation' at last night's prestigious Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Awards for its range of 'free-from' products. The ceremony at London's The Brewery celebrated the leading businesses and people in the food and drink industry.

The award was sponsored by Omron Electronics and showcases companies that are leaders in product research and development or in pioneering new processes. Taywell has been recognised for the launch of its second range of refined sugar-free, dairy and allergen-free vegan frozen desserts under the 'Sweet Rebellion' brand. This innovation joins a range of free-from ice-creams launched in May 2015 following three years of research and development.

Soon after their first ice cream launch in 2015, a supermarket chain approached the company and requested a range of allergen-free ice-creams to cater for the rising trend of consumers choosing to remove ingredients containing gluten and dairy from their diet. Taywell responded with a totally allergen-free range that is also Vegan Society and Kosher approved.

The ice cream range also offers 40% less calories and 50% less saturated fats. The vegan range is high in fibre offering an innovative, fortified option to those seeking an alternative to traditional ice-cream desserts.

FDF's Director General, Ian Wright, said: “The FDF Awards are truly are a badge of excellence and Taywell Ice Creams' win demonstrates the vital contribution that innovative food and drink companies make to improving diet and health. The range of food and drink on sale today has never been bigger, reflecting changing consumer tastes and innovation by companies in this industry. Taywell Ice Creams is offering choice to those seeking an alternative to dairy-based ice-cream and I congratulate them on their success.”

Robert Brooks, European Industry Marketing Manager - Food & Beverage at category sponsor Omron Electronics said: “It is an honour for Omron Electronics to support and present this award to Taywell Ice Creams. They have superbly demonstrated a product innovation strategy to reflect the rapidly changing consumer environment and richly deserve the award.

These changes are ever increasing and we as a sector must embrace and adapt accordingly, in terms of concept, ingredients, manufacturing, shipping and sales.”
