The Birmingham-based ABP UK food company scooped the award for 'Environmental Leadership' at last night's prestigious Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Awards for its ABP Ellesmere development in Shropshire. The ceremony, held at London's The Brewery, celebrated exceptional businesses and industry professionals from across the food and drink supply chain.

The result of five years of planning, two years of building and a £26 million investment, the company's beef processing facility – ABP Ellesmere – is at the forefront of using innovation to ensure a sustainable operation. Commissioned in autumn 2015, the site is delivering significant reductions in CO2, net water usage, energy and waste – setting a standard in the food and drink manufacturing industry.

Accredited carbon-neutral and incorporating the latest in technological innovation, the site includes a variety of mechanisms, including: rainwater harvesting, a waste water treatment plant, heat recovery, energy efficiency initiatives, a biodiversity corridor and a Combined Heat and Power unit fuelled by waste animal fats recovered onsite.

The redevelopment of ABP Ellesmere is a key enabler in delivering environmental targets. The company's aim with the project was to exemplify this new approach and set a standard for environmental performance and efficiency, while delivering world-leading animal welfare, quality and productivity.

FDF's Director General Ian Wright said: “ABP UK has demonstrated a real commitment to environmental leadership through its ABP Ellesmere development, which has delivered significant results in terms of carbon footprint reduction, water and energy usage and waste reduction. As an industry we face ever growing sustainability challenges and only smart solutions will help us to feed a growing population with less resource. I congratulate the company on these on being at the forefront of environmental leadership in the food and drink industry.”
