Sunshine Retirement Living Gives a Lyft to Seniors Across America

Senior Living Company Partners With Ridesharing Service to Enhance Transportation Options for Residents at Several Communities in U.S.

BEND, OR--(Marketwired - Sep 8, 2016) - For many seniors in America, preserving their independence is vital to living a full, active and healthy life. This includes the ability to visit friends and family, get to medical appointments, and attend cultural events when they want or need to and without depending on others. Sunshine Retirement Living, owner and operator of 19 senior living communities in the United States, has entered into an innovative partnership with Lyft, the popular, national ridesharing service, to supplement its free, door-to-door transportation services and provide residents with more of the independence they desire.

"We are seeing many of our residents becoming more and more tech savvy, searching the Internet for information at their fingertips or using social media as a communication tool," said Luis Serrano, CEO, Sunshine Retirement Living. "Because of this, using a ridesharing service like Lyft is becoming less foreign to them, and they now see it as a way to enhance the quality of their lives on so many levels including promoting family, social and community engagement to sustain and grow a positive and healthy mental outlook. We are delighted to be among the first senior living companies in the country to bring Lyft to our communities."

Sunshine Retirement Living is piloting the Lyft program at nine communities, including Quail Lodge in Antioch, Calif., Summerfield Estates in Tigard, Ore., Deer Park in Novato, Calif., Creekside Oaks in Folsom, Calif., Villa Serena in Santa Clara, Calif., Waterford Terrace in La Mesa, Calif., The Landing at Behrman Place in New Orleans, La., Dunwoody Pines in Dunwoody, Ga., and Hammond Glen in Sandy Springs, Ga.

Residents, their family members and caregivers can utilize the safe, reliable, convenient and affordable transportation option at their convenience by simply requesting a ride through their in-house concierge staff. With resident safety a paramount priority at all Sunshine communities, Lyft's unyielding emphasis on passenger safety through detailed driver background checks, zero tolerance policy and more was critical to deciding to partner with the ride-sharing service. Lyft can also offer significant cost savings for residents with rates that are on average 35 percent cheaper than taxi or other livery services.

For Margie Atkins, a 79-year old resident of the Quail Lodge Retirement Community, the new partnership with Lyft gives her more flexibility and freedom to take care of herself and her cat. "In the past, I've had to rely on more expensive taxis to shuttle me to and from the hospital or medical appointments, and to take my cat to the veterinarian twice a week for her shots. Using Lyft will likely save me hundreds of dollars each year, and the added independence of being able to get around town when I want or need to, has made all the difference in how I plan my days."

"Our mission at Lyft is to reconnect communities through effective transportation and, without question, this includes our elder population," said Gyre Renwick, head of healthcare enterprise partnerships, Lyft. "Persons 65 years or older represent about one in every seven Americans -- far too often this population can live in isolation and lack mobility and independence due to little or no transportation options. Our partnership with Sunshine Retirement is aimed at helping to improve the overall quality of care and lifestyle for their residents."
