Men and women take a good look in the mirror to decide on this elective surgery.

NEW YORK, Sept. 06, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Women are increasingly opting for eyelid surgery procedures, or “eye lifts” as they’re widely known. Once thought of as a woman’s focus area for aging skin, men have jumped on the bandwagon in opting for this cosmetic surgery.  Knowing that no skincare regimen will solve a droopy eyelid look, men and women elect this popular surgery for an immediate, lasting effect. As shown in the newly released Global Survey results, ISAPS shows that women have the highest number of eyelid surgeries and it ranks as the third most popular surgery worldwide, at 13.1% of all surgical procedures.

People are slowing the hands of time by choosing to improve their “windows to the soul” in this popular procedure. This surgery is usually done for cosmetic reasons, but for those whose vision is impacted by drooping eyelids, it becomes a necessity. With age, the skin naturally droops due to gravity, environmental exposure and genetics. No amount of skin creams can combat this undesired effect of aging.  

Because the eyes are so telling of a person’s thoughts and feelings, it makes sense that men and women alike would be eager to have this area look as good as possible.

Men claim a large percentage at 21.8%, or 276,082 of eyelid surgeries, and women make up the majority at 988,620, or 78.2% of eyelid surgeries. Brazil performed the most eyelid surgeries at 143,165, or 11.3% of the country’s total procedures. The United States comes in second with 141,505 procedures, or 11.2% of total surgeries.

“In these results, we find that men are just as concerned with their appearance as women,” notes Susumu Takayanagi, MD, ISAPS president. “While women have always wanted to look younger as they age, men are increasingly feeling the desire to retain a youthful look,” he states.  The results are available on the ISAPS website, http://www.isaps.org, in the News section, and will be discussed at the biennial global Congress in Kyoto, Japan, October 23–27, 2016.

This collection of information of surgical and non-surgical treatments from 2015 was tabulated from a questionnaire sent to approximately 35,000 plastic surgeons in the ISAPS database. ISAPS is the only organization that collects this type of data on a global scale, and the study is viewed as a valuable resource in the field.
