This comes in response to a report stating that the overall costs of cyber security incidents and data breaches are much higher than the financial impact of burglary through the European Union over the same period of time.

The Regulation was approved by the European Commission and Parliament, and is due to come into force on 25 May 2018, by which time organisations collecting and handling EU residents’ data will need to achieve compliance.
