Investing in Our Future.Atlanta, GA — NAMC held its 47th Annual Conference at the beautiful Omni Hotel, CNN Center, in Atlanta, GA. Under this year’s theme of “Building Bridges that Empower Our Youth and Community: Investing in Our Future,” the conference started on June 15, 2016 with two-day OSHA 10 Certification Training and concluded with the Hall of Fame Reception and Gala on June 17, 2016. Minority contractors, development business leaders, major corporate partners, industry professionals, and guests from across the country attended the grand finale formal gala and were motivated by an inspiring message from
keynote speaker,

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. The mayor also spoke enthusiastically about Atlanta’s growth over the years, the abundance of construction projects, building a model of cooperation with minority contractors, and empowering the city’s growing community of entrepreneurs and small businesses with powerful new initiatives such as the City of Atlanta’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative (WEI) and Access to Capital for Entrepreneurs (ACE).

The National Association of Minority Contractors (NAMC) announced the installation of its new board of directors. The 2016-2017 NAMC national executive officers are Wendell Stemley, President; Nayan Parikh, Executive Vice President; Pete Varma, Treasurer; and Rosalind Styles, Secretary. New national board members were sworn in by Lisa Colon-Heron, Esq. of Smith, Currie, & Hancock, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, during the national board of directors meeting on Saturday, June 18 at the Omni Hotel, Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to other educational workshops, representatives from the U.S. State Department, U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a federal contracting session which provided attendees with valuable information and insight into working with the federal government and the billions of dollars of contract opportunities available both in the United States and overseas.

C. David Moody, CEO of C.D. Moody Construction, Inc. and Arthur Queen, NAMC President Emeritus, officiated installation of the NAMC Hall of Fame Class of 2016. Recipients honored were Hoyt Hsiao, President/CEO, Shaw-Lundquist Associates, Inc.; Dominic Ozanne, CEO, Ozanne Construction Company; Michael Russell, CEO, H.J. Russell & Company; and Vic Verma, President/CEO, Alpha Installation and Waterproofing, Inc.

Others who received awards at the gala on Friday were Lisa Colon Heron, Esq., NAMC General Counsel, Smith, Currie, & Hancock, LLP, NAMC Ray Dones Service Award; William A. Kirk, Partner, K&L Gates, LLP, NAMC Parren J. Mitchell Advocacy Award; and Holder, Hunt, Russell, Moody, A Joint Venture, NAMC Construction Team of the Year, Atlanta Falcons Stadium Project. Binyam Gurmu, Purdue University, was recognized as the newly formed NAMC Student Chapter’s first student president. NAMC also honored Hilton O. Smith, Turner Construction (Ret.) and NAMC President Emeritus, Arthur Queen, Chairman, EGM Services, Inc. with lifetime achievement awards for their dedication and tireless efforts on behalf of women and minority business owners in the construction industry.
