During the first half of 2016, a spate of crypto-ransomware attacks compromised patient data and disrupted operations at numerous hospitals across the U.S. ultimately many having to pay thousands to attackers in exchange for their data. In June 2016, TrapX Security released its report "Anatomy of Attack: Medical Device Hijack 2 (MEDJACK.2)" which found that cyberattackers were able to penetrate and evade hospital security defenses by targeting medical devices that use legacy operating systems with known vulnerabilities. Medical devices are particularly vulnerable to attack because they seldom receive security updates and are not able to take advantage of advanced cybersecurity solutions, ultimately providing easy remote access for attackers looking to launch malicious campaigns and steal valuable patient data.
