TGTE Condemns Orlando Massacre
The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) strongly condemns the brutal massacre of innocent citizens in Orlando, Florida by a homophobic and racist gunman. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were killed in this senseless attack and to the American people at large for what has been described as the worst mass shooting in US history.
Time and again the world is witnessing murderous assaults on civilian populations by both state and non-state actors throughout the world under different guises and repeatedly. It is an indication that there is something deeply wrong with the world, where instead of dialogue, debate and democratic means of settling differences, violence has become the predominant as well as instant form of expression.
At this juncture in history there is a need for everyone, including powerful governments, to reflect on why is it that we have to come a pass where the lives of human beings seem to have so little value and can be snuffed out so whimsically. Where have we gone wrong and what kind of future can our children and grandchildren expect if such a trend continues?
It is clear from the violence, hatred and conflict in different parts of the world that there is a rise in temperatures politically and socially apart from what has been caused ecologically by global warming. This is because the greed and hunger for power of a few is resulting in massive dislocations of ordinary people who are not allowed to live with dignity or access their due share of the Earth’s resources.
Violence cannot be justified under any circumstances but if it has to stop there needs to be global commitment, and not only lip service, to the tenets of both democracy and justice by everyone, including state agencies. It is only when all on this planet are assured of their place under the sun that conflicts will cease and we can look forward to an era of both true peace and prosperity.
In this tragic hour, the TGTE wishes to reaffirm its own commitment to democratic methods in pursuit of all its goals and calls upon everyone to do so also, as the only means of resolving all problems everywhere.
