GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, May 3, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- May 3, 2016 Geneva – Malaysia has emerged as the winner for the World Summit of the Information Society (WSIS) award for the first time. Malaysian green technology manufacturer Green Data Center LLP (GDC) received the award for the E-Environment category which recognizes ICT technologies from around the world that support sustainable development. The WSIS awards is organized by the International Telecommunications Union which is the United Nations agency specializing in information and communications technology. Matthew Rajendra, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GDC received the award at the Centre of International Conferences here in Geneva today. The company’s local innovation named Eco2 is a next generation green data centre cooling technology that features the world’s only renewable, biodegradable, sustainable and non-toxic ICT specific coolant that reduces data centres’ energy consumption and carbon footprint by half. “This is significant because the data centre industry is one of the biggest greenhouse gas contributors with 3.3% of the emissions in 2015 coming from the industry” said Rajendra. This award comes in the back of four other local and international awards that the company garnered last year for its technology including the International APICTA Award for Best of Sustainability and Environmental Technology. “We are truly humbled by the recognition and see this as a clear validation that we are headed in the right direction” he added.

Rajendra also pointed out that support from the Malaysian government was instrumental in the development of the technology. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) a regulatory body under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia had acted as the Technology Kickstarter whilst the Malaysian Technical Standards Forum Bhd and the Green ICT Working Group facilitated the development of the proof of concept of Eco2. According to Tuan Haji Aisharuddin Nuruddin the Division Head of Technology and Society of MCMC, Eco2 was the first in a series of Green ICT measures that MCMC supported as part of its industry promotion and development activities. “MCMC is proud to be associated with this multiple award winning technology and would like to wish more success for GDC on future projects” he said.

The Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC) an agency under the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water initiated the Eco2 pilot site project jointly with GDC and both entities are now in a joint venture to commercialise the technology. MGTC Chief Executive Officer, Ir Ahmad Hadri Haris said that the partnership with GDC has been growing from strength to strength and that the disruptive technology has immense potential to drastically change the carbon footprint of the data centre industry. “MGTC is delighted that all the hard work and resources that had been committed to the technology is paying off”, he added.

GDC has also been working with the Malaysian Industry Group for High Technology (MIGHT) on various Green ICT activities, as a part of the Science to Action Initiative, of which MIGHT is the secretariat. Dr Kavintheran Thambiratnam, program manager at MIGHT works with his organization as a key interlocutor, bringing together policy and technology nurturing to advance high technology interests in Malaysia. “Eco2 is a good example of how successful outcomes can be accomplished through strong ties between the industry, academia and government” he added. As part of its academia engagement activities, GDC has been working with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Heriot Watt University UK on innovative research and development programs for next generation green data centre technology.
