USHCC Applauds Roberta Jacobson's Confirmation as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico

/EINPresswire.com/ -- WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - April 28, 2016) - After ten months of inaction as our nation's highest diplomatic post to Mexico remains vacant, the USHCC is thrilled that Assistant Secretary of Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson has been confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. Our association is proud to have staunchly advocated for Ms. Jacobson's confirmation over the past few months while others have chosen to remain silent.

For nearly 100 years, Mexico has been a steady ally to the United States and our diplomatic relationship is critical to American interests.

  • Mexico is our third largest trading partner and 2nd largest export market in the world
  • The U.S. conducts over $530 billion in bilateral trade with Mexico
  • Mexico is a larger trading partner than Brazil, Germany, India, Japan and the United Kingdom
  • Over 6 million American jobs depend on bilateral trade with Mexico.
  • Over 1 million American citizens residing in Mexico.

The USHCC is particularly grateful to the courageous, bipartisan coalition of legislators who joined us in advocating for Assistant Secretary Jacobson's confirmation, including Senators: John Cornyn (R-TX), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), John McCain (R-AZ), Tom Udall (D-NM), Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).

In particular, Senators Cornyn and Flake's leadership and willingness to reach across the aisle, should be acknowledged and commended. They worked tirelessly to make the importance of the vacant diplomatic post in Mexico City known to their Senate colleagues. These Senators have demonstrated the true political courage that the American people need to see in our nation's capital.

"On issues ranging from trade to migration to security and the border, the interests of the United States are served and Arizona benefits when our nation is well-represented in Mexico," said Senator Jeff Flake. "Though long overdue, I'm pleased that the Senate has confirmed an individual as qualified and capable as Roberta Jacobson to serve as U.S. ambassador to Mexico. I'd like to extend gratitude to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a group whose hard work and dedication were instrumental in the effort to advance this nomination."

"The United States' relationship with Mexico is essential to our country's economy and security, and our Ambassador serves as a critical nexus for this partnership. Today is a key step towards filling what is a crucial diplomatic post not just to Texas, but for the nation as a whole," Sen. Cornyn said.

We are confident that as the next U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Jacobson will continue to show the world, that contrary to today's politics, the true strength of America is not in the example of our power, but in the power of our example. We look forward to seeing her assume this critical post.
