EBV is Linked to Lupus in Women of Reproductive Age; The CBCD Reviews the Medical Literature

Numerous studies have shown a link between higher numbers of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in the blood, and the development of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own tissues. The link between the virus and the disease is seen most often in women during child bearing age. Dr. Draborg and colleagues wrote that this link includes “abnormally elevated viral load, pronounced EBV-directed antibody responses, and deficient EBV-specific T-cell responses.” (1) Most importantly, studies have shown that more than 99.5% of lupus patients are infected with the Epstein-Barr Virus.

EBV is not the only virus to be implicated in the development of SLE. In fact, both the herpes zoster virus (HZV) and the human cytomegalovirus (CMV) have also been linked to lupus. As the Johns Hopkins Lupus Center notes, “certain environmental factors have been linked to the development of lupus … infectious disease agents such as the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV, which causes mononucleosis or “mono”), herpes zoster virus (the virus that causes shingles), and cytomegalovirus have also been implicated.” (2)

However, of these viruses, infection with the Epstein-Barr Virus is most common. The CDC notes that “Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), also known as human herpesvirus 4, is a member of the herpes virus family. It is one of the most common human viruses. EBV is found all over the world. Most people get infected with EBV at some point in their lives.” (3) The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) therefore recommends that individuals infected with EBV take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin against the latent Epstein-Barr Virus. The formula of these natural, antiviral products was shown to reduce EBV symptoms in two separate post-marketing clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. Additionally, the formula was designed to help the immune system target the latent form of the virus.
