Lerner School Students Get Creative Making Traditional Passover Food

/EINPresswire.com/ -- DURHAM, NC--(Marketwired - April 27, 2016) - At The Lerner Jewish Community Day School, the North Carolina Triangle's only Jewish Day School, students are celebrating the Jewish festival of Passover this year with a unique food competition!

Passover is an eight-day festival celebrated in the spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nisan. It commemorates the freedom of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. The festival begins with a seder, an ordered meal, which includes symbolic foods corresponding to the biblical story of Moses and the freeing of the Israelites from Egypt. Seder customs include telling the story of Moses, discussing the story, drinking four cups of wine, and eating Matzah, or unleavened bread.

One beloved part of the seder meal, especially for children, is eating charoset, a mix of chopped apples, cinnamon, dried fruit, nuts, and wine that is meant to symbolize the mud that the Israelites used to form bricks for Pharaoh when they were slaves in Egypt. Every household has its own traditional version of the Passover staple.

On the afternoon of April 26th, each grade level at The Lerner School received a basket of ingredients. Based on those ingredients, the students created their very own charoset. Students then presented the charoset to a panel of judges for a blind taste test. The winning class took away the honor of being The Lerner School's first "Charoset Challenge" victors!
