Investments in Open Source Development Across Industries Underscore How Software Today Is Being Built

These member investments signal a commitment to building technologies together to advance the world's most critical computing infrastructure.

From networking and the Internet of Things to cloud and container-based technologies, open source has become the de-facto standard for software development. The Linux Foundation hosts projects that unite developers, SysAdmins, open source professionals and business leaders to accelerate open technology development. Member investments in collaborative development enable companies to work with their peers to establish, build and sustain the greatest shared technologies of our time. 

For open source projects to achieve economies of scale, a common set of requirements must be considered: security practices; governance and operations; IP management; software and ecosystem development and membership recruitment. The Linux Foundation provides this expertise and resources, regardless of industry, so that its members can focus their efforts toward collaborative development, code development and commercial adoption.

AllSeen Alliance is a cross-industry collaboration advancing the Internet of Things (IoT) through an open source software project called AllJoyn. New members include ABHIRO, Affectio, Argenox Technologies, Avempace, CastleOS, Cozify, Elite Crest Technologies, Evey Innovation, Hager Group, Johnson Controls, Kidde, NetBeast, NXP Semiconductors and Ready for Sky.

Automotive Grade Linux is a collaborative open source project developing a common, Linux-based software stack for the connected car. New members include Ford Motor Company, Mazda Motor Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors and Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd.).

Cloud Foundry Foundation formed on January 21, 2015, to sustain the development, promotion and adoption of Cloud Foundry as the certified industry standard platform for cloud application development. In the last 12 months, the Foundation has grown to 55 members. Honeywell, ECS Team and Proximetry are among its most recent member investments.

Cloud Native Computing Foundation is dedicated to advancing the development of cloud native applications and services. AppFormix, Avi Networks, Datawise.io, Eldarion, Goldman Sachs and Plexistor are the latest member investments since the project's formal launch in December 2015.

Open API Initiative was formed in November 2015 to create an open API standard and advance digital transformation. The project welcomes Sampo Software Oy as its newest member.

Open Container Initiative is a broad coalition of industry leaders focused on common standards for software containers. New members are Facebook, Robin Systems Inc. and Symantec.

Open Platform for NFV advances state-of-the-art NFV through the creation of a carrier-grade open source platform. New members include Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Openet, and University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL).

Yocto Project provides templates, tools and methods to create custom Linux-based systems for embedded products regardless of the hardware architecture. New members include Linaro and TimeSys.
