A recent survey of drivers showed that drivers need more information about currently offered safety features. Participants were questioned about nine existing safety features on automobiles. The results showed that only half of the respondents were aware of recent safety innovations such as lane departure warning. Lane Departure warning is a safety feature that keeps drivers alert on the road. When the car leaves its lane it provides a warning alert. The alert comes in either the form of a vibration or an audible warning.

Another feature that roughly half of drivers surveyed were unaware of was forward-collision warning. This innovative safety component alerts drivers that a crash is imminent. It is also known as a pre-crash system. It combines the use of radar with camera and laser sensors to detect when a crash is about to occur. The system does not automatically apply the brakes to prevent the crash, but does warn the driver that it is imminent. Studies show that owners of cars with this feature have lower auto insurance claim rates than those whose vehicles are not equipped with the warning system. Forward-collision and lane departure warning systems are common on high-end vehicles.

Even fewer drivers are aware of adaptive cruise control. Not only does it maintain the vehicle at a set speed while driving on the highway, it also keeps it at a safe distance from the car ahead. It can accelerate or brake automatically as needed. It uses radar and camera technology to respond to traffic conditions. A number of advanced safety systems are primarily available on high-end or luxury vehicles. This is changing as the technology becomes more standard. More affordable vehicles are including these safety features today. Certain systems are even mandated by the U.S. government on all new cars.
