Growing Green Thumbs: Gardener's Supply Company Joins the Green Education Foundation to Cultivate Young Gardeners

/EINPresswire.com/ -- BURLINGTON, VT--(Marketwired - November 24, 2015) - Gardener's Supply Company is proud to congratulate the winners of this year's Green Thumb Challenge. The challenge aims to get kids into the garden and learning about sustainability. The grant this year goes to Matthews, North Carolina's Covenant Day School in partnership with Philips Academy, and Mission of Hope International School (Haiti). The students will use the Green Thumb Challenge Grant to purchase an advanced biochemical soil testing kit to run a university-level analysis of Mentha piperita growth within an 800 gallon greenhouse aquaponic system. Read about their project here.

"Covenant Day School's garden program exemplifies all the qualities we're seeking in a grant winner," says Victoria Waters CEO, Green Education Foundation (GEF), which initiated the challenge in 2009. "The garden is an integral part of the students' learning experience, providing valuable science, technology, engineering and math lessons, while also contributing to the well-being and health of the students and the community. We could not be happier about their contributions to the Green Thumb Challenge," she adds.

Gardener's Supply Company has partnered with the Green Education Foundation for several years to provide the Green Thumb Challenge grant. "We are so proud to have a hand in teaching the joys and rewards of gardening -- as well as sustainability," says Gardener's Supply Company spokesperson Claudia Marshall. "Learning how to feed one's own family from a simple and economical garden is an invaluable skill."

The Green Education Foundation provides teachers and students virtually all the resources they need to learn how to garden together -- from information on composting and garden maintenance to a handy guide to decide which vegetables to plant and how.

In addition to the grant of $250, the winners receive a prize package of garden gear from Gardener's Supply worth nearly $700.

Gardener's Supply Company's Claudia Marshal adds: "We couldn't be more pleased to support these students because we believe that every garden matters."
