Rappelling Raleigh and Charlotte North Carolina Landmarks for Special Olympics

RALEIGH AND CHARLOTTE, NC, USA, September 23, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- High-rise suspense arrives in Raleigh next week bringing community-minded thrill-seekers an opportunity to rappel 30 stories down the Wells Fargo Capitol Center.

Over the Edge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics North Carolina, will be in Raleigh October 2-3, and atop the Hyatt House Charlotte Center City, November 14, 2015.

Spectrum Properties and Hyatt House contributed the use of the iconic buildings in Raleigh and Charlotte to benefit Special Olympics.

“Over the Edge will accommodate an estimated 300 people in 2015,” said Keith L. Fishburne, Special Olympics North Carolina President/CEO. “We expect about 200 in Raleigh and 100 in Charlotte.”

Rappellers can sign up as an individual or create a team. Supporters can sponsor an individual, sponsor or join a team, or make a direct donation to Special Olympics.

A few of the early signing teams include Raleigh’s Finest, Charlotte’s Dream Team, Leesville Middle School, North Carolina Highway Patrol, and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Sport Clips Haircuts, picked up three slots in Charlotte and Raleigh for adrenaline-wanting customers.

Special Olympics athlete, coach, mentor, and Global Messenger, John Gray of Charlotte, will be rappelling in Raleigh, according to Fishburne. A tennis, basketball, and soccer athlete, Gray served as a tennis coach for the North Carolina athletes at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games.

“Geoff Griffin will be going Over the Edge in Raleigh for the fifth straight year,” said Fishburne. “Geoff was our top individual fundraiser for the past five years and his goal this year is $12,000.”

Café Carolina and Bakery, committed to hiring Special Olympics athletes, was 2014’s top fundraiser with over $30,000. The Café is repeating last year’s successful A Sweet Way to Help campaign through October 3, enabling customers to purchase oversized, fresh baked cookies for one dollar.

Over the Edge funds will benefit Special Olympics North Carolina programs offering year-round sports training and competition for nearly 40,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes train and compete on local and state levels in 19 sports, providing motivation, building self-esteem, and creating opportunities for success.

No climbing or rappelling experience is required. The Over the Edge rappelling team includes rope access experts and veteran adventure professionals. Participants must weigh between 110 and 300 pounds and be at least 14 years of age (14-17 year-olds require signed consent).
