Google to Build Data Center in Alabama Powered by Renewable Energy

July 2015 - Google plans to build a new data center at a coal-burning power plant in Jackson County, Alabama, which will be powered 100 percent on renewable energy. Under an agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Google will invest $600 million to transform TVA's retiring, coal-based Widows Creek power plant into a data center that use renewable energy. Google will utilize the plant's existing electric transmission lines and work with TVA to incorporate solar and wind energy onto TVA's electrical grid. In addition, Google will use its energy efficiency technologies at this data center, which are expected to harness up to 3.5 times the computing power out of the same amount of energy that was utilized five years ago.
